The City received nine nominations, of which 13 people were included and numerous volunteers at an elementary school. The nominations were displayed at City Hall` and were on view as the Mayor and Council Members presented the certificates of recognition. Random Acts submitted included school volunteers; the rescue of baby squirrels; helping friends, ' neighbors, and family members with tasks; Recipients of Random Acts of Kindness: volunteering at church, hospitals, and CEAP; r Patty and John Bednarczyk planting flowers and weeding at the Eugene H. Hagel r Evergreen Park School Volunteers Arboretum; and a committee that refurbished the r Family Council Steering Committee Members patio area for residents at Maranatha Care Center. Nancy Madden Vicki Mattiuz The City Council extended its thanks and Carol Lea Nord appreciation to all who participated in this year's Peg Snesrud Random Acts of Kindness recognition, to those Karen Tirrell (in memory) making nominations, and especially to those who r Justin Flory have contributed to the qualify of life here in r Betty Muellner Brooklyn Center. r Lelabel O'Loughlin r Paul Samuelson r Mike and Kim Schmitt Code Enforcement Summer Sweep Final Report The 2002 summer sweep has now been completed with much success. Many properties that had shown a history of non - compliance for years have come into compliance. A major factor of this success was a change in approach to violators. The focus this year was repeated contact with property owners who were in violation and aggressively promoting compliance in each stage of the repairs. In comparison with past years, few citations were issued due to the high compliance rate. Overall, the Code Enforcement Team believes the community has become more aware of the City's code enforcement efforts, the summer sweep, and the most common codes that exist throughout the City. Established in 1992, the program is supported by the efforts of 31 groups and several individuals. The volunteer groups and individuals represent a cross - section of the community, including service organizations, employee groups, schools, scouts, churches, and neighborhood groups. The organizations are recognized by signs at their adopted facilities. Each year volunteers collect about 5,000 pounds of trash. With the help of this program, our parks, trails, and streets are cleaner and more inviting. Cyber Shopping With the Holiday season, more people turn to Cyber shopping for its convenience and variety. Unfortunately, Cyber crimes have increased and we feel it is important for our residents to be informed. Listed below are safeguards for your safe Internet shopping: ➢ Ensure the web site is secure prior to giving out your information. A protected site will state that they are secure. ➢ Be familiar with the company from which you are purchasing. ➢ Be cautious of any deals that are "too good to be true" — they usually are! This also means they are probably some type of scam. ➢ Since most purchases over the Internet require the use of a credit card, it is critical that you are very selective with whom you choose to give your credit card information. ➢ Know all of the charges up front, including any shipping charges. ➢ Keep your credit card statements long enough to verify purchases, then destroy them so that the information cannot be used by unauthorized persons. If you suspect that your credit card number has been stolen, immediately contact the Brooklyn Center Police Department at (763) 569 -3333. i Internet Safety Tips The Internet is very useful and contains a wealth of information. However, we must consider who is on the receiving end of obtaining this information as criminal activities are oftentimes conducted over the Internet. As parents and concerned individuals, it is critical to be aware of our children's activities and to remain informed about whom they are communicating with while they "surf the net." Most Internet users are not a threat. Unfortunately, however, there are also people using the web as a means to engage in criminal activities. The Brooklyn Center Police Department recommends the following safety tips when using the Internet: ➢ Place your computer in a common family area where usage is visible and easily monitored. ➢ Set rules for online access. ➢ Know what your child is doing while they are on the Internet. ➢ Never give out any identifying information. This includes your name, the city you reside in, school you attended, or the logo /mascot of that school. ➢ Monitor the services or websites your child accesses. ➢ Be aware of the "chat rooms" your child visits. ➢ Do not permit people you do not know to enter your "chat rooms." ➢ If you or your child receives inappropriate messages (sexual, hostile, threatening in nature), delete them immediately! Instruct your child to let you know immediately if they receive any of these types of messages. ➢ DO NOT let your children send photos of themselves to anyone without first checking with a parent. ➢ DO NOT let children meet with anyone encountered online before obtaining parental approval. ➢ Check with your Internet Service Provider for Parental Control settings. There are several programs available that prohibit access to certain Internet sites. Check with your local computer software carrier for further information. And please contact our Crime Prevention Team if you have questions or concerns, at (763) 569 -3333. i www.cityojbrooklyncenter.org 6 City Watch Public Safety News ............................................................ ............................... There are three levels of play in the program: CITY LEAGUES: This is the traditional in -house program. There is a prep league for ages 13 and a junior league for ages 14 and 15 (playing together). All players are evaluated as they come into the program for the first time and then they are drafted onto a team. These teams will play between 15 and 22 games during the course of the season. TRAVEL TEAMS: The league also sponsors traveling baseball teams. All players that register are eligible to try out for the travel team at their age level. The number of teams at each age level (13- 14 -15) will depend on the number of players that register to try out for each group. The league will sponsor teams at the A- travel level, B- travel level, and C- travel level if there are enough qualified candidates and coaches. All candidates go through a skill tryout procedure, where hitting, throwing, catching and running are tested. This is phase 1. Then, players are placed on teams and they play a ten (10) game spring league as phase 2 of the travel team tryout procedure. NO player is placed on a travel team until the spring league is over. Independent evaluators, league coaches and managers, using league criteria may judge the players. These tryouts are conducted each year. Players wishing to play traveling baseball must tryout each year. A- Travel Teams — consist of players graded as among the very best candidates trying out to play at the highest level of competition. B- Travel Teams — consist of players that were not selected to play on the A travel teams because of a real or perceived difference in the level of ability. C- Travel Teams — consist of the players that were not selected for the A or B level travel teams. Fee is $85.00 /person. Ages 16, 17 & 18 — Teams made up of ages 16 are entered into the VFW, Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth programs.
