Brooklyn enter Police Officers working with School Patrols from the Brooklyn Center area

are bringing the message to motorists that school is opening and the streets will have more children present during the morning and
afternoon commute. We would like to make motorists aware of the children and of school bus traffic.
At the beginning of every school year, it seems the Greater Metropolitan Area experiences a pedestrian/school bus accident. Most of these
accidents can be prevented. An awareness day, just prior to the opening of local schools, can have an impact on preventing an accident of
this type.
Motorists are reminded:
1. Stop for school buses with stop arms activated. Both directions of travel MUST stop for a school bus stop arm. It is a Gross
Misdemeanor to violate the Stop arm law.
2. School buses with flashing amber or red lights should be treated with caution. Flashing lights on the school bus indicate the bus is
stopped or stopping. Children may be present in the immediate area.
3. Please follow the speed limits set for the roadway. Especially during morning and afternoon commutes.
4. School patrols with stop flags are to be treated the same as a stop sign. Be patient when approaching a group of children crossing
the roadway.

,Safety Tips for Parents on
Your Child's Use of the Internet
Children and teens are becoming amazingly proficient computer and Internet users and this
trend will only escalate in the future. Unfortunately many parents did not grow up with access
to the information highway and may not understand all of the implications and possible danger
that can lurk out in the ethernet. Here are a few tips for parents that can help keep kids safe
while surfing.
1. Keep the computer in a public room. Do not put it in the child's bedroom, or anywhere it is difficult for you to monitor
what your child is doing on -line.
2. Instruct your child not to give out personal information on -line, such as their full name, address, telephone number or
school information.
3. Set safety rules that you and your child understand and post them by the computer.
4. Limit the amount of time your child spends on -line. Late night times or excessive use of the computer by a teenager
may signal a problem.
5. Use either the parental controls built in by your Internet service provider or purchase programs such as Caber Sentinel,
Net Nanny, Surf Watch, or Cyber Sitter that install parental controls on your computer.
6. There is no substitute for parental supervision. Talk to your children and be aware of their on -line activities. Know what
type of chat rooms, e-mail, and messages your child is involved in on -line. Take part in setting up your child's on -line
account so that you will be aware of their screen name and password.
,Safety Tips for QX&en on the Internet
1. Never agree to meet someone in person that you met on -line without first getting your parents permission. If they agree
to let you meet someone, make it in a public place and take your parents with you.
2. Never send someone a picture of yourself, or accept a picture (or any attachment) sent to you without first checking
with your parents.
3. If someone says something on -line that makes you feel uncomfortable, tell your parents right away.
4. Do not answer messages that sound angry. You cannot prevent these from being sent to you. Just do not respond to
them.
5. Remember that not everything you read on -line is the truth. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is not
true.
Remember....
Don't lose your common sense just because you are on -line. When communicating on -line remember
you are talking to a stranger. The people you are talking to may not be who they say they are, and may
be saying things to gain your trust.

CHILDCARE SERVICE - MIN. AGE 4 MONTHS
The Brooklyn Center Community Center "PLAY CORNER" will be provided for parents attending morning classes, programs,
meetings, swimming or working out in the exercise room at the Brooklyn Center Community Center. The cost is $1.25 per child for an hour
and a half. Additional time is $1 an hour. The minimum age is four months. (Babies less than four months in infant seats may accompany
parents to their classes.) On non school days, elementary age children are welcome to go to the "PLAY CORNER." Beginning September
10, the "PLAY CORNER" will be open, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., CLOSED Tuesday mornings.

The adaptive recreation program is a cooperative effort of the cities of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Crystal, Golden Valley, Maple
Grove, New Hope, Plymouth, Robbinsdale and West Hennepin Community Services. Participants must pre- register. For persons not
living in one of the communities listed above, call for registration information and add $5 to the fee. West Hennepin Community Center is
an agency serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in the West and Northwest Hennepin areas. Services include
information and referral, advocacy, and counseling. Programs include social/recreation clubs and education programs. An integration
