The City of Brooklyn Center is seeking groups and individuals who are willing to serve as resources to assist people
in minor home repair and yard maintenance assistance. This effort is called Brooklyn Center Cares. Brooklyn
Center Cares will be working in September to assist elderly or disabled persons with some minor home repairs and
yard clean up. We would like to develop a directory of persons and organizations who would be willing to assist in
minor home repair and yard cleanup for elderly persons and other persons who because of health or circumstances
find themselves unable to keep up their house as they would like to and in compliance with City codes. The City has
been able to link volunteers and persons having this type of need for assistance in the past, but would like to expand
the number of organizations and persons who would be able to provide assistance so that we might link up people
having a need with good neighbors in the city willing to help. If you would like more information on Brooklyn
Center Cares or would like to volunteer yourself or your organization to be a resources to assist in this effort, please

Code Enforcement Effort Continues
Once again this spring and summer, the City of Brooklyn Center's Community Development Department and Police
Department will work together to identify and inform owners whose properties need to be cleaned up because they
are not in compliance with City ordinances.
Inspections of all city neighborhoods are being conducted, and letters will be sent to residents whose homes have
code violations. The properties are then reinspected after 14 -60 days, and citations or formal complaints are written
for homes not in compliance.
Code violations may be reported by calling the Police Department at (612) 569 -3339 to leave a message. Residents
are required to leave their name and a daytime telephone number in order to accurately process complaints. Residents
reporting code violations will still remain anonymous. All complaints, inquiries, and return phone calls will be
responded to within seven days. Code violations that require an immediate response may be reported by calling (612)
569 -3333. Residents that want a follow -up contact from the Police Department must leave their name, address, and
telephone number. Preferred method of contact must also be indicated (i.e., letter, telephone, or personal visit).

MUCA (Minnesota Utility Contractor's Association) hosted the congressional site visit on June 2, 1999, in the Southeast
Neighborhood of Brooklyn Center where street, storm sewer, and utility construction is underway. The City's contractor on this
project, Widmer, Inc., is a member of MUCA, a professional association dedicated to advancing utility construction techniques.
The Southeast Neighborhood project was selected by MUCA for a site visit because it is typical of the types of costly infrastructure
improvements which cities across Minnesota and the Nation face as cities get older.

MediaOne Upgrade Underway in Northwest Suburbs
Work is well under way on MediaOne's $200 million upgrade of its entire Twin Cities network. Called "Project':':
Broadband," the initiative will ultimately mean improved picture quality and reliability, additional channel choices,
and new services for MediaOne subscribers such as two-way high speed Internet access and digital telephone service.
There are several important steps to Project Broadband, some of which have already been completed in many
Northwest area communities. The initial phase includes a complete walkout and re-design of the existing system,
which will divide neighborhoods into clusters, or "nodes," consisting of approximately 250 homes. Next, to prepare
for the installation of new hardware, all existing green boxes, or "pedestals," must be replaced. Additional cable will

also be added to the existing network in the form of fiber-optic lines. In each case, construction personnel may be
required to work in the utility easements adjacent to customer yards.
The final state of construction occurs when current electronics in the field are replaced with state-of-the-art
equipment. This process will mean intermittent service interruptions for MediaOne subscribers as the new technology
is spliced into place. Once field work and testing are complete, customers will be activated to a new channel line-up.

CHILDCARE SERVICE - MIN. AGE 4 MONTHS
The Brooklyn Center Community Center "PLAY CORNER" will be provided for parents attending morning classes, programs, meetings,
or swimming at the Brooklyn Center Community Center. The cost is $1.25 per child for an hour and a half. Additional time is $1 an hour. The
minimum age is four months. (Babies less than four months in infant seats may accompany parents to their classes.) On non school days,
elementary age children are welcome to go to the "PLAY CORNER." Beginning the week of September 20, the "PLAY CORNER" will be
open, Monday, Thursday and Friday, 9 a.m. - 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and 5:45 - 8:15 p.m. CLOSED Wednesday. After
classes or swimming, parents are invited to relax in our concession area before picking up their child.
The North View "PLAY ROOM" Childcare will be offered for the Thursday evening exercise classes by pre registration. If you need
