APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes were approved for the November meeting.
CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
The city held two meetings about proposed tenant protection ordinance. A revised draft will come of this
ordinance and will come to City Council in the future. The owners of the Sears site held a virtual meeting to
present on their plans for the site. There are manyjob openings in the city currently. The police department
just hired a new officer starting in February. The Covid-19 numbers are high now. The state is currently
redistricting.
COMMISSION MEMORIALS or SERVICE RECOGNITION
The application was rejected for a plaque on a bench. Looking to reach out to the Commissioners to see what
they might want other than a bench. Interim Public Works Director Mike Marsh is going to talk to the City
Manager about getting this done. Councilmember Bonovsky read a rejection letter on why a current bench
could not be used as a memorial. This will be pushed forward to the City Manager.
BROOKLYN CENTER MEMORIAL POLICY REVIEW
Chair Sorenson brought up memorials in the city that were put up that were not approved. Commissioner
Branch brought up that residents may not be aware that a policy exists. Interim Public Works Director Mike
Marsh spoke to the fact that this is a new policy as of July. Also that the memorial was denied because it did
not seem right to put a memorial on something the tax payers paid for.
COMMISSION APPOINTMENT SCHEDULE
Councilmember Graves is still pushing for this at each meeting and is hopeful that this will happen soon.
BC PARKS OUR BEST KEPT SECRET UPDATE (WEBSITE)/RECREATION MARKETING DISCUSSION
Chair Sorenson brought up that our parks are all on the website but the pictures are out of date.
Councilmember Bonovsky will take some pictures in summer. There is still some cleaning up to do on the
website. It was brought up to advertise on social media more often and set up events. Also to actively engage
in person. Another thought would be to sign up for a text alert from the city. Program Supervisor Carissa
Goebel shared all of the ways the Recreation department currently markets their programs. Another idea was
to have calendar invites from the website.
2022 PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATION
Program Supervisor Carissa Goebel presented on playground color options. The first playground that was
shown was Centennial West. Option 2 was voted on 4-1. For Kylawn option 1 was selected. Option 1 was
selected for Marlin Park. Riverdale Park had option 2 selected. A motion was made by Commissioner Ebert
and seconded to recommend the 2022 playground be brought to the council.
LIONS PARK PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT REPLACEMENT
Chair Sorenson that the Lions made the park in 1961. It was all marsh land when they created this park.
Program Supervisor Carissa Goebel reported that it does not appear that the playground will be moved in the
near future. The driving range is still unknown.
