REGULAR SESSION
SEPTEMBER 27, 2021

CALL TO ORDER
Chair Sorenson called the meeting to order at 6:30 pm.
ROLL CALL
Chair Sorenson and Commissioners Sanchez -Lopez, Ebert, Lungelow and Carey were present.
Commissioner Bonovsky and Branch were unable to attend. Also present were Recreation
Director Cordell Wiseman, Recreation Program Supervisors Joe Ericksen, Carissa Goebel,
Interim Director of Public Works Mike Marsh, and Supervisor of Streets and Parks Pete Moen.
Councilmember Graves was unable to attend.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
There were no additions and the agenda was approved.
INTRODUCTIONS
Introductions were done for new commissioners on the meeting.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
The minutes were approved for March, April, and June meetings.
PLAYGROUND EQUIPMENT PRESENTATION
Program Supervisor Carissa Goebel introduced Bret from Flagship Recreation who will help
Brooklyn Center replace five playgrounds in the upcoming year. Bret gave a presentation on
current playground trends. These parks were installed at Maple Grove, Crystal and New Hope.
Commissioner Carey brought up safety, sightlines and what type of equipment would fit our
community's needs. Carissa informed everyone that she will be going to the community to ask
for feedback on designs.

Program Supervisor Joe Ericksen informed the meeting that equipment has been ordered. We
are currently waiting for signage. Staff has taken a bike safety course. There is no date on when
this will be completed at this time.
COMMISSION MEMORIALS or SERVICE RECOGNITION
Commissioner Ebert suggested a plaque and is waiting to hear back on the status of this
suggestion. Chair Sorenson also brought up the idea of the plaque. Joe Ericksen and Mike
Marsh will sit down at a later date and discuss this.
COMMISSION APPOINTMENTS
Chair Sorenson brought up that two new commissioners, Sanchez -Lopez and Carey have joined
the commission and brought up that Councilmember Graves would hopefully address adding
more at the next Council meeting.
PLAYGROUND REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE
Program Supervisor Carissa Goebel reported that playgrounds at West Palmer, Riverdale,
Centennial West, Marlin, and Kylawn are scheduled to be replaced in 2022. Grandview, East
Palmer, Twin Lake, Wangstad, Willow Lane and Happy Hallow are schedule for replacement in
2023. Lions Park may also make it on the 2023 schedule depending on the driving range.
Freeway Park is still up in the air. The city of Brooklyn Center is in talks with the BC School
District about collaboration on Grandview Park playground equipment replacement. It was
brought up to add a parks tour for next June.
FUTURE MEETING
October 19th meeting will meet over zoom.

A motion was made to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
