HomeMy WebLinkAbout2022 08-11 CCM SPECIAL SESSION MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE CITY COUNCIL/ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY OF THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA SPECIAL SESSION AUGUST 11, 2022 CITY HALL—COUNCIL CHAMBERS CALL TO ORDER The Brooklyn Center City Council met in Special Session called to order by Mayor Pro Tem Marquita Butler at 6:05 p.m. , ROLL CALL Mayor Pro Tem Marquita Butler and Councilmembers April Graves, Kris Lawrence-Anderson, and Dan Ryan. Mayor Mike Elliott was absent. Also present were City Clerk Barb Suciu and Deputy City Clerk Alix Bentrud. 2022 PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS CANVASS OF THE 2022 PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS City Clerk Barb Suciu explained the Primary Elections were on August 9,2022. There were 3,224 voters. In the Mayoral race,the top two moved on to the general election,which were April Graves with 1219 and Mike Elliott with 1060 votes. In the City Council race,there were nine candidates, and the top four moved on to the General Election. Those four candidates were Dan Jerzak with 1342 votes,Tenesha Kragness with 1074 votes,Kau Guannu with 646 votes, and Andrew Johnson with 549 votes. Councilmember Ryan moved and Councilmember Graves seconded to approve the election results as presented. Motion passed unanimously. Ms. Suciu noted there is potential for a publicly funded recount for the fourth and fifth candidates, Andrew Johnson with 549 votes and Joylenna Garcia with 535 votes. The difference is 14 votes. The 14 votes are divided by the total votes in the election and a recount is called for if the number is less than one-half of one percent. It is publicly funded,and the candidate must request the action. Councilmember Ryan asked what the deadline is to request the action. Ms. Suciu stated the deadline is August 16, 2022. 8/11/22 -1- Councilmember Lawrence-Anderson asked what the cost of a recount is. Ms. Suciu stated the City would bring in six election judges for the recount, and it should take them about four hours. Therefore, it should cost $1,000-$1,200. Hennepin County ofFered to help if the City was unable to staff the recount. These funds would come from the general budget. Councilmember Graves asked if Joylenna Garcia is aware of the options. Ms. Suciu confirmed Ms. Garcia and Mr. Johnson are aware of the potential recount. ADJOURNMENT Mayor Pro Tem Butler moved and Councilmember Ryan seconded adjournment of the City Council Special Session at 6:15 p.m. Motion passed unanimously. That said meeting was held pursuant to due call and notice thereof and was duly held at Brooklyn Center City Hall. 3.
