B ackground:
O n A ugust 11 , 2020, the C ity of Brooklyn C enter held a Municipal P rimar y Elec/on for tw o City Council
s eats . There w ere s ev en (7) candidates running for City Council. The objec/v e of the P rimary is to narr ow
the field from s even (7 ) candidates to four (4) candidates .
D ue to C O V I D -1 9 , 2020 Elec/on law s w ere modified s lightly allowing tw o extra day s for elec/on officials to
proces s mail ballots if they w ere post marked earlier than A ugust 11, 2020.
T he top four (4) candidates are:

A lfreda D aniels 1 ,269

T hese four candidates will be placed on the G ener al Elec/on ballot for Nov ember 3 , 2020. A ls o, for the
G eneral Elec/on, there w ill be the op/on of w rite-in candidates as w ell.

T his is a 27% voter tur n out of w hich 16% w as abs entee vo/ng.
Comparing this informa/on to 2016 and 20 1 8 , Elec/o n Day I n Person Vo/ng 21% and absentee vo /ng 3%, and
E lec/on D ay I n Perso n Vo/ng 8% and absentee vo/ng .82% respec/vely. As yo u ca n see, 2020 Primary had a
higher voter turn out than bo th of these years.

Member introduced the following resolution
and moved its adoption:
RESOLUTION NO.
RESOLUTION REGARDING CANVASS OF AUGUST 11, 2020, MUNICIPAL
PRIMARY ELECTION
WHEREAS, the City Council has met for the purpose of canvassing the election
returns of the municipal primary election for the office of Council Member.
BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center that it is
hereby determined by official canvass that Marquita Butler, Kris Lawrence-Anderson, Alfreda
Daniels, and Sizi Goyah received the highest number of votes in the August 11, 2020, Municipal
Primary Election and are declared to be the nominees for the office of Council Member of the City
of Brooklyn Center.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center
that the City Clerk is directed to place the names of the nominees on the General Election ballot.
