Announcement Chariman Vetter announced that the Mayor had appointed
with the Council's approval Bernie Weslow to the Conser-
vation Commission. Chairman Vetter added that Mr. Weslov
was a Science instructor at Brooklyn Center High School
and that she felt that he would be a valuable asset to
the Commission. She further stated that she hoped that
the applicants not chosen for the Commission would accept
assignments with the Environmental Task Force.
Kaleidoscope Report The first agenda item was a review from each Commissioner
relative to their individual observations and comments about
the Conservation Commission's booth at Kaleidoscope.
Chairman Vetter explained that she had worked in the
film room showing the movie, "Featherfoot" . She added
that while few individuals attending Kaleidoscope took
the time to watch the movie, those individuals who did
indicated that they felt it to be quite worthwhile. It
was the apparent consensus of those individuals who
watched the film that it should be included in drivers
training courses.
Commissioner Jensen-stated that a good number of indivi-
duals were interested in the oil recycling centers. After
a brief discussion the Commissioners agreed that the
booth had not attracted a.s many individuals as had been
expected.

Vetter had led the spring hike through Kylawn Park and
the adjoining preserve on Saturday, May 7, 1977. A
total of sixteen (16) additional persons took part in the

by 9:00 a.m. and that the group returned to the shelter
building at Kylawn for some refreshments.
Commissioner Winkelman reported that a number of
boards in the walkway of the park have been
destroyed and that they constituted a hazard. The
Secretary replied that he would bring the matter to the
attention of the Director of Parks and Recreation Gene
Hagel.
The next agenda item was Commissioner Jensen's
report on the "Pride in Your City Campaign" . Commis-
sioner Jensen registered her disappointment with various
local civic groups in the City. She noted that she had
had very little response or support from such groups for
the campaign. She further added that the Commission
should start planning the "Pride in Your City Campaign"
earlier next year in hopes of enhancing civic group
participation.
Commissioner Jensen stated that a group of thirty (30) to
fifty (50) youths would be picking up litter along Shingle
Creek Parkway from the Minneapolis border northwards to
Highway 100 and from there north to the City Hall. She
further added that a group of youths from Brooklyn United
Methodist Church had found sponsors to pay them a fee
for every pound of litter they picked up. The monies are
to be used for a youth summer camp. After a brief discus-
sion about group projects, Commissioner Jensen stated that
Larry Davenport would be covering the various campaign
projects for the newspaper. A brief discussion then
ensued relative to a possible tree planting campaign in
the fall.
Chairman Vetter announced that there would be no meeting
of the Brooklyn Center Conservation Commission during
the months of June and July. Chairman Vetter also suggested
an informal tour by the Commissioners of the Woodlake
Preserve in Richfield. After a brief discussion, it was
agreed that tentative plans should be made on an agreeable
date sometime this summer. -
The next item of business dealt with the Commissioner's
resolution to acknowledge the civic works of Mr. John
Koester. Chairman Vetter appointed Commissioner
Winkelman to deliver the resolution because Mr. Koester
was too ill at this time to attend the Commission meeting
to accept the resolution.
