fall hike plans. She stated that Saturday,

40 for the fall family hike through the Kylawn

Commissioner Winkelman next reviewed a concern Bike Path Discussion
for the operation of bikes in the City of
Brooklyn Center pointing out that there were
no designated bike paths in the City. A brief
discussion then ensued relative to the bikeways
concept and the proposed Shingle Creek trailway
system. The secretary stated that the walkway
network as originally planned was built to
comprehend bicycle as well as pedestrian traffic
and to serve the City as a network to reach
strategic locations in the City. Commissioner
Livingston stated that in his opinion the roads
were the best and cheapest way to provide for
bike traffic. He commented that the pedestrian
and bicycle traffic combined was as dangerous
as bicycle and car traffic. He stated that
painted lines and signs indicating a bikeway on
the edge of the road and providing for no parking
in that area could adequately, and for relatively
little money, serve as effective bikeways.
Commissioner Livingston then stated that he would
review a City map to determine which areas would
be applicable to this type of a bikeway system.
It was the consensus of the Commission to review
this matter at their next meeting for possible
discussion and establishing it as a Conservation
Commission project.
The secretary then pointed out that any review
or suggestions in this area of utilizing portions
of the street right-of-way as bike paths would
have to be subject to consultation with the
City Engineer.
Motion by Commissioner Forstrom and seconded by Adjournment
Commissioner Winkelman to adjourn the meeting.
The motion passed unanimously. The Brooklyn
Center Conservation Commission adjourned at
8030 p.m.
