OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF
HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA
REGULAR SESSION
SEPTEMBER 18, 1975

Call to order The Brooklyn Center Conservation Commission me--
in regular session and was called to order by
Chairman Vetter at 8:00 p.m.
Roll Call Chairman Vetter, Commissioners Dorff, Forstrom.

Jensen and Livingston. Also present was
strative Assistant James Lacina.
Approval of Minutes Motion by Commissioner Dorff and seconded by.
5-15-75 Commissioner Livingston to approve the m-in=rtes
of the May 15, 1975 meeting. The motion [-r: 6sed
unanimously.
Recycling Reports Chairman Vetter introduced the first item c
business on the agenda, that of a report o_u
the oil depository recycling stations anu tZ1--,
Girl Scout recycling project at 69th and
Dupont.
Commissioner Dorff proceeded with a brief re%7i&A<
of the oil depository stations report. He
pointed out the specific locatirn s of the oil
depositories stating that the program has been
underway for some two months and that to d --"e
it has received excellent publicity.
Commissioner Jensen expressed a concern for,
notifying the Environmental Science Library, the
Minneapolis Library, the Brooklyn Center Library
and Chamber of Commerce offices of the oil
recycling services and locations. A brief
discussion ensued relative to the project.
Commissioner Jensen commented that she would
look into the matter of listing this service
in various directories and environmental and
community publications.
Commissioner Jensen then continued with a report
on the Girl Scout recycling program of cans and
paper at 69th and Dupont. She stated that the
Girl Scout recycling program has been changed
to include the collection of cans and glass
every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and
paper on the last Saturday of the month. She
indicated that Hoerner Waldorf would supply a
trailer on the last Saturday of the month for
collecting the paper. She also commented that
the recycling depot could use a new sign and
inquired if the City could furnish a sign for
the center.
The secretary stated he would research the
matter.
Commissioner Jensen then reviewed a YMCA work-
shop to be held on October 20th that would in-
volve a session on recycling. She stated that
this topic should be considered for the Commis
siDn's involvement at its October meeting.
Commissioner Winkelman arrived at 8030 p.m.
Chairman Vetter next reviewed two possible
programs for the Winter Community Education
Program. She recommended a winter hike and
a presentation by the Elm Creek Preserve
Naturalists as two possibilities. She sug-
gested that the Commissioners consider these
matters and be prepared to comment on other
items at the October meeting.
Chairman Vetter next commented relative to
the fall hike of the Conservation Commission.
A brief discussion ensued relative to that
program. Chairman Vetter suggested that
Commissioner Winkelman lead a hike through
Kylawn Preserve on Saturday, October 25th.
It was the consensus of the Commission to
set Saturday, October 25th, as the date for
the fall hike through Eylawn Preserve to be
led by Commissioner Winkelman.
Chairman Vetter indicated she would contact
the secretary regarding flyers and a film to
be shown at the building in the Preserve prior
to the hike.
Chairman Vetter then introduced Mr. Tom Huber,
a Hoy Scout, who has recently undertaken the
project of plantings around the building at
the Preserve. He briefly reviewed the work
th t he had done around the building. A
brief discussion ensued relative to the
plantings and the turf in the area. Commis-
sioner Winkelman commented that the trail
system. seemed to be in pretty good shape.

Palmer Lake Proposal The secretary next reviewed the Park and Recrea-
tion Commission°s proposals regarding Palmer
Lake in conjunction with its park comprehensive
plan. He stated that to date the Commission has
done notMng more than review the past plans and
attempt to fit them in with today°s needs in the
park concept. ® He stated that they had made no
decisions or recommendations as to Palmer Lake
development or nondevelopment® He commented
briefly can a recent resolution passed by the
Chamber of Commerce for Brooklyn Park to con-
sider acquisition of the remaining parcels of
Palmer Lake to the north cE Brooklyn Center,
He thers indicated that, he would keep the Conserva-
tion Commission iii-.formed as to action in this
area s
Meeting Time Change Motion by Commissioner Dorff, seconded by Com-
missioner Winkelman to change the meeting time
from 8:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Motion passed
unanimously.
Adjournment Motion by Commissioner Borstrom and seconded by
Commissioner Dorff to adjourn the meeting. The
motion passed unaniemously. The Brooklyn Center
Conservation Commission meeting adjourned at
10:00 p,m~
