Conservation Commission of the City

REGULAR SESSION
AUGUST 9, 1973
CITY HALL
Call to order The Conservation Commission met in regular
session and was called to order by Chairman
Vetter at 8:15 p.m.
Roll Call Chairman Vetter, Commissioners Almen,
Byrnes and Jensen. Also present were
Administrative Assistant: Daniel Hartman
and James Lacina.
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Commissioner Almen and seconded
7-12-73 by Commissioner Byrnes to approve the
minutes of the July 12, 1973 meeting.
The motion passed unanimously.
Report on Proposed
Shelter Buil ding
at the Brooklyn
Center - Crystal
Environmental
Preserve
Chairman Vetter reported on the proposed
shelter building at the Brooklyn Center -
Crystal Environmental Preserve. She
stated that Mrs. Ain Mencel, Chairman of
the Environmantal Preserve Task Group,
had received a bid of $500 for the moving
of the shelter building from Willow Lane
Park to a Preserve site.
The Chairman stated that Pars. Mencel was
in the process of obtaining a bid on the
concrete slab needed for the shelter.
She also stated that Mrs. Mencel was
planning to contact Mr. Gene Hagel,
Director of Parks and Recreation, to
discuss the overall proposal.
Results of the The secretary then reviewed the results
Community Education of the Community Education Survey, conducteG
Survey in School by the Community Education Council of
District No. 286 School District No. 286. Chairman Vetter
presented a letter from Mr. James Norwick,
Community Education Coordinator, asking
the Commission to sponsor certain conser-
vation oriented programs during the fall
semester.
Commissioner Dorff arrived at 8:37 p.m.

A lengthy discussion ensued relative to
the survey results and the conservation
oriented programs which generated the
greatest amount of interest.
It was the consensus of the Commission to
limit the fall course offerings to the
moat popular programs as indicated by the
results of the survey.
Course Offering for The commission agreed to sponsor "Family
the Fall Semester Nature Hike in the Brooklyn Center - Crystal
Environmental Preserve" on October 27, 1973,
"An Afternoon in River Park" on October 13,
1973, and "Protection of the Consumer" to
be scheduled during November.
Chairman Vetter indicated that she would
contact Mr. Norwick on the course offerings
for the fall semester. She also agreed to
investigate the feasibility of offering
"Ies For the Birds" during the fall
semester.
Recess The Commission recessed at 9:12 p.m. and
• resumed at 9:56 p.m.
Joint Meeting with A discussion ensued relative to the joint
Park and Recreation meeting of the Park and Recreation Commis-
Commission sion and the Conservation Commission. It
was established by the Commission that the
joint meeting would be on August 28, 1973
at 6:30 p.m. The Chairman stated that she
would handle the details of the meeting.
Island of Peace Commissioner Dorff made a brief report on
Proposal the Island of Peace proposal. He stated
that a walkway system had been developed
on Chase Island and tours for disabled
veterans and crippled children were under-
way.
Commissioner Dorff stated that a committee
had been formed made up of representatives
of Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park and
Fridley to negotiate the purchase of
Durnam Island. He stated that Fridley
• pulled out of the committee, but that
Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park were in
the process of investigating the matter.

Adjournment Motion by Commissioner Jensen and seconded
• by Commissioner Dorff to adjou-n the
meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
