Call to order
Minutes of the Proceedings of the
Conservation Commission of the City
of Brooklyn Center in the County of
Hennepin and State of Minnesota
REGULAR SESSION
JANUARY 25, 1973
CITY HALL
Vetter at 8:20 p.m.
The Conservation Commission met in regular
session and was called to order by Chairman
Roll Call Chairman Vetter, Commissioners Dorff, Almen,
and Winkelman. Also present was Administra-
tive Assistant Daniel Hartman.
Approval of Minutes
Motion by Commissioner Winkelman and
January 11, 1973
se&rlded: by Commissioner Dorff to approve
the minutes of the January 1.1, 1973,
meeting. Motion passed unanimously.
Community Education
Commissioner Dorff reported on the Community
Council in School
Education Council in School District 286.
District No. 286
He stated that the Community Education
Council was sponsoring a return trip to
St. Louis Park to inspect their facilities
and to gain insight into Community Educa-
tion approaches. He stated that the
Brooklyn Center Jaycees have joined the
Community Education Program and are
planning a trade fair to be held at
Brooklyn Center High School.

Commissioner Winkelman then reported on

Preserve Task Group
Preserve Task Group. She stated that the
Task Group was in the process of proofing
the brochure informing citizens of the
preserve area. She stated that they were
trying to get funding for the printing of
the brochure from the recycling drive fund
in the form of a Conservation project,
Recycling Drive The Commission discussed in length the
Task Group Recycling Drive Task Group and the success
of the recent:recycling drives. A concern
was expressed by the members of the
Commission that the Jaycees have changed
their point of view in that the recycling

drives are no longer just a public service
provided to the citizens of Brooklyn Center
but also a money making project for the
Jaycees.
The Conservation Commission then reiterated
its initial support of the recycling drives
as a public service and that the money
made from the drives should not become a
major part of the recycling drive concept.
The Commission instructed Commissioner
Almen to contact Mr. Garland Pierce, Chair-
man of the Recycling Drive Task Group, to
discuss the Commission's concern.
It was also the consensus of the Cam mission
that Commissioner Almen present a proposal
to the Jaycees creating a committee made
up of two representatives from the Conser-
vation Commission and two representatives
from the Jaycees to decide on what the
recycling drive fund should be used for.
• Brooklyn Center - Commissioner Winkelman then continued her
Crystal Environmental report on Brooklyn Center - Crystal
Preserve Task Group Environmental Preserve Task Group. She
stated that the Task Group was concerned
in that the skis purchased for ski touring
in the preserve area had not been used
by the citizens. She commented that
weather over the past few weeks has had
a great influence on the ski touring
activity.
Conservation Chairman Vetter stated that she was in
Commission Newsletter the process of drafting a newsletter to
be distributed to all of the schools and
civic groups in Brooklyn Center. She
commented that it would have a major
section devoted to ski touring at the
Brooklyn Center - Crystal Environmental
Preserve. She also commented that the
newsletter would have information on the
recycling drives and the special projects
of the Youth Task Group planned for 1973.
The Commission recessed at 9:25 p.m. and
resumed at 9:58 p.m...,

Youth Task Group Chairman Vetter then reported on the
Youth Task Group. She stated that the
Task Group was in the process of organizing
their 1973 activities. She :stated that a
meeting was held at which certain youth
group leaders presented ideas and sugges-
tions. She commented that they were
examining activities along the lines of the
ones that were accomplished in 1972 as well
as landscaping around the Maranantha
Nursing Home, Riverside Park drainage work,
Xerxes median development and activites
in line with the tree nursery newly acquired
by Brooklyn Center north of Kylawn Park,
Chairman Vetter stated that she was in the
process of discussing those activities with.
Mr. Gene Hagel, Director of Parks and
Recreation for Brooklyn Center. She st~;e
that the activities for 1973 must be
educational as well as productive for the
youths who are involved.

Commissioner Dorff to adjourn
The motion passed unanimously.
