HomeMy WebLinkAbout2008 05-20 PRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION MAY 20, 2008 COMMUNITY ROOM #221, COMMUNITY CENTER CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. ROLL CALL Chair Sorenson, Commissioners Ebert, Peterson and Russell were present. Commissioners Lee and Shinnick were excused. Also present were City Council Liaison Mark Yelich, Councilmember Kay Lasman and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim Glasoe. APPROVAL OF AGENDA By consensus, the agenda was approved. • APPROVAL OF MINUTES - April 15, 2008 Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Ebert to approve the April 15, 2008 minutes of the Park and Recreation Commission as presented. The motion was unanimously approved. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Councilmember Yelich reported the following items from recent City Council meetings: • The City Council had adopted nine specific goals for 2008. These goals centered on crime reduction, code enforcement and redevelopment. • The City Council is working with staff and the Housing Commission on Rental Housing and Foreclosure strategies. Councilmember Yelich detailed some of the major components of the strategies. CENTERBROOK-CROSS MARKETING ACTIVITIES CARS Director Glasoe reported that the Centerbrook Golf Course staff had been working with Brookland Golf Course in Brooklyn Park and New Hope Golf Course in New Hope regarding cross marketing activities. Mr. Glasoe shared examples of two strategies that had been implemented for 2008. The first was a passbook, where passes could be used at any of the three courses. The second was a series of . three youth tournaments, with one held at each of the courses. Mr. Glasoe added that teams would be solicited to represent each of the courses and the tournaments would include greens fees, food and prizes. • BROOKLYN CENTER YOUTH COLLABORATIVE CARS Director Glasoe reported that the CARS Department had been involved in a new initiative related to youth, called the Brooklyn Center Youth Collaborative. Mr. Glasoe noted that the group had been meeting since February, and included representation from the CARS and Police Departments, the Brooklyn Center School District, Hennepin County Probation, the faith community and other social service organizations. Mr. Glasoe noted the intent of the group was to identify resources available to the youth of the community and to develop a calendar of events for the summer. CARS Director Glasoe added that he was encouraged by the early success of the group and hoped the initial interest continued. KYLAWN PARK SHELTER BUILDING CARS Director Glasoe noted that "If a picture is worth a thousand words, a personal visit is even better" and, as evidenced by the tour, the contractor was making significant progress and should have little difficulty meeting its July 1, 2008 deadline. STRATEGIC PLANNING SESSION CARS Director Glasoe reminded the Commission that the CARS Department had received a Communities Empowering Youth grant, intended to increase the department's capacity to serve . the diverse community. Mr. Glasoe noted that one of the activities of the Communities Empowering Youth grant was a strategic planning process for the department. CARS Director Glasoe asked that Commissioners review their personal calendars to find week-end in November to hold the training. SET NEXT MEETING DATE By consensus, the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for June 17, 2008, with a parks tour scheduled for 6:00 p.m., and the regular meeting at 7:00 p.m. in Community Room #221 of the Brooklyn Center Community Center. It was determined that June's tour would include Freeway, West Palmer and East Palmer Parks, MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Ebert, to adjourn the meeting at 8:25 p.m. The motion passed unanimously. 0
