HomeMy WebLinkAbout2004 06-15 PRM• MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION JUNE 15, 2004 COMMUNITY ROOM #221 CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:14 p.m. ROLL CALL Chair Sorenson, Commissioners Ebert, Peterson, Shinnick and Theis were present. Commissioner Russell was absent and excused, Commissioner Hauger was absent Also present was City Council member Kathleen Carmody and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim Glasoe. • APPROVAL OF AGENDA By consensus, the agenda was approved APPROVAL OF MINUTES - May 18, 2004 Commissioner Shinnick made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Peterson to approve the May 18, 2004 minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission as presented. The motion passed unanimously. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Council Member Carmody reported that the City Council had discussed the recommendation of the Park and Recreation Commission regarding establishing non-smoking zones in parks during organized youth activities. Ms. Carmody noted the City Council was supportive of the recommendation. Council member Carmody reported on the current status of Brookdale Mall, including the development agreement and updates on some of the mall tenants. Commissioners asked if there were any development plans for the old Jerry's Market and • Rainbow Foods sites. Council member Carmody responded that she was not aware of any plans for either site. JULY ADOPT-A-PARK CLEAN UP Chair Sorenson asked if Commission members might be available to assist with the clean-up of Marlin and Lakeside Parks on Saturday, July 10 at 8:30 a.m. All available Commissioners were asked to meet at Marlin Park at 8:30 a.m. on July 10d'. GARDEN CITY SCHOOL-PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENTS CARS Director Glasoe reported that the City Manager had planned for the Council to take up the Commission's recommendation regarding the Garden City School playground at their July 28`h meeting. DOG RUN CARS Director Glasoe handed out copies of a news article regarding the City of Crystal's efforts to establish a Dog Run. Mr. Glasoe noted that the proposed location of the dog run was on Metropolitan Airports Commission property, adjacent to the Kylawn Park Preserve. Mr. Glasoe noted that residents would be able to access the site form Kylawn Park. Mr. Glasoe asked if the Commission would like him to contact the City of Crystal to find out more about their efforts, and the possibility of Brooklyn Center collaborating. By consensus, Commissioners asked Mr. Glasoe to contact the City of Crystal regarding the dog run and report back at a future meeting. • SET NEXT MEETING DATE By consensus, the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for September 21, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. in Community Room #221 of the Brooklyn Center Community Center. MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Shinnick made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Peterson to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed unanimously. The meeting was adjourned at 7:33 p.m. •
