REGULAR SESSION
JUNE 18, 2002
COHEN COMMUNITY ROOM
CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:29 p.m.
ROLL CALL
Chair Sorenson, Commissioners, Ebert, D. Peterson, R. Peterson, Russell and Shinnick were
present. Commissioner Theis was absent and excused.
Also present were ISD District #286 Superintendent Dr. Antoinette Johns, Director of
4 Operations Steve Anderson, and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim
Glasoe.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES - May 21, 2002
Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Shinnick to approve the
May 21, 2002 minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission as presented. The motion
passed unanimously.
COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Glasoe indicated there would be no
liaison report as council member Peppe was unable to attend the meeting.
GRANDVIEW PARK/DISTRICT #286 PROPERTY EXCHANGE
CARS Director Glasoe along with Superintendent Johns and Director of Operations Anderson
presented the conceptual site plan for the Earle Brown Elementary School/Grandview Park
site. This presentation included detailed placement of the new school and the various park
amenities.
49 Dr. Johns, Mr. Anderson and Mr. Glasoe answered Commission questions regarding the plan,
the school building and the various park amenities.
After considerable discussion, Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by
Commissioner R. Peterson to recommend approval of the site plan to the City Council. The
motion passed unanimously.
ADOPT-A-PARK
Commissioner Ebert reminded the Commission that, in order to meet their Adopt-a-Park
commitment, they would need to schedule a summer clean-up date.
After some discussion, the clean up was scheduled for 9 a.m., August 10, 2002. Available
Commissioners were asked to meet at Marlin Park on the 10th.
CIVIC CENTER BUILDINGS UPDATE
CARS Director Glasoe informed the Commission that work on the remodeling project was
wrapping up, and that the last of the City Hall Departments would be moving into there new
space very soon.
Mr. Glasoe reported that final landscaping work and interior finish work was to be completed
prior to the grand re-opening on June 30, 2002.
Mr. Glasoe indicated that the Community Center attendance for the month of May was almost
equal to the May 2001 attendance.
40 COMMUNITY CENTER GRAND RE-OPENING
Cars director Glasoe indicated that a Grand Re-opening Celebration for the Community Center
was planned for June 30, 2002.
Mr. Glasoe noted the event would run from 1:00-4:00 p.m. and would include entertainment,
refreshments, tours, a dedication of the Cohen Community Room and the sealing of the Year
2000 Committee time capsule.
Mr. Glasoe asked if the Commissioners might consider leading the Community Center tours at
the Grand Re-opening. After some discussion, Commissioners Sorenson, Russell and Shinnick
volunteered to assist with the tours.
SET NEXT MEETING DATE
By consensus, the next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for
September 17, 2002 at 7:00 p.m. in the Cohen Room of the Brooklyn Center Community
Center.

Commissioner Peterson made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Russell, to adjourn the
meeting at 8:25 p.m. The motion passed unanimously.
