HomeMy WebLinkAbout2000 05-16 PRM• MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION May 16, 2000 CITY HALL Prior to the regular meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission toured each of the Destination Parks including; a° Grandview ua, Evergreen ew West Palmer ua- Kylawn/Arboretum/Preserve w Central • CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:19 p.m. ROLL CALL Chair Sorenson, Commissioners Ebert, Mead, Peterson, Russell, Shinnick and Theis were present. Also in attendance were Mayor Myrna Kragness, City Council Liaison Ed Nelson, Public Works Director Diane Spector and Community Activities, Recreation and Services Director Jim Glasoe. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - April 18, 2000 There was a motion by Commissioner Russell, seconded by Commissioner Ebert to approve the April 18, 2000 minutes of the Parks and Recreation Commission as presented. The motion passed unanimously. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Council Liaison Ed Nelson shared with the Commission that a tentative bid letting date had been established for the Brooklyn Boulevard improvements. Liaison Nelson also discussed the ongoing improvements at Brookdale and indicated the tentative opening date for the new theaters is August 3. DESTINATION PARK PLANNING Public Works Director Spector reviewed the Commission's discussions to date regarding • destination parks and reviewed the "Destination Parks Plan" that had been developed based upon staff and Commission input. The Commission continued discussions regarding the concepts and issues detailed in the Destination Parks Plan. • After considerable discussion, Commissioner Shinnick made a motion to recommend the Destination Parks Plan to the City Council as presented. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Ebert and unanimously passed. In addition to the Destination Parks Plan motion, separate motions were forwarded regarding specific items included in the plan. Commissioner Shinnick made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Russell, recommending that Garden City Park be renamed as Central Park and that Brooklane Park be renamed Garden City Park. Also, Commissioner Russell made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Shinnick to recommend the addition of a Parks Maintenance staff position to increase the level of parks' maintenance. Both motions passed unanimously. SET NEXT MEETING DATE A motion was made by Commissioner Peterson and seconded by Commissioner Russell to not hold meetings in June, July or August unless Commission action was necessary. The motion passed unanimously. The next meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission was set for September 19, 7:00 p.m. in Conference Room A at City Hall. MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Shinnick made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Peterson, to adjourn the meeting at 8:38 p.m. The motion passed. 0
