HomeMy WebLinkAbout1995 02-21 PRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARKS AND RECREATION • COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION FEBRUARY 21, 1995 CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson called the meeting of the Parks and Recreation Commission to order at 6:34 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairperson Sorenson, Commissioners Peterson, Lasman, Russell, Shinnick, and Schendel were present. Commissioner Mead was absent. Also in attendance were Director of Recreation, Arnie Mavis; Public Services Coordinator, Jim Glasoe; and guest Sister Helen Giesen, Principal of St. Alphonsus Parish School. APPROVAL OF MINUTES - JANUARY 17, 1995 There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson, seconded by Commissioner Shinnick to approve the minutes. The motion passed. • REQUEST FOR JOINT PLAYGROUND PROJECT, ST. ALPHONSUS CHURCH Sister Helen Giesen, Principal of St. Alphonsus Parish School was present to ask the commission about the availability of funds for new playground equipment. She indicated she was aware of the cooperative purchase at Willow Lane School. Recreation Director Mavis indicated that the only way funds might be available, is if a bond issue for parks improvements is passed. Chair Sorenson indicated that cooperative ventures were possible at Willow Lane and Evergreen Parks because there was city owned parks that abutted the school property. Chair Sorenson noted that since the city was interested in doing a "land swap" for a portion of their property, that money for playground equipment might be included in those negotiations. He advised her to speak to Community Development Director, Brad Hoffman. COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT Council Liaison, Kristen Mann was not present. Recreation Director Mavis indicated that $2,250.00 for the Brooklyn Community Band had been put back into the budget by the City Council. Chair Sorenson asked for updates and timelines for the Park & Ride and the bond referendum. Public Services Coordinator Glasoe will bring that information to the March meeting. There was considerable discussion of some apartment complexes in the city. • JOINT COMMISSION MEETING (DISCUSSION) All commission members felt the Joint Commission meeting was beneficial. All felt that having more than one presenter for the Parks and Recreation Commission information was good. They felt it showed involvement. Chair Sorenson felt it may be beneficial to split the meeting up into two nights, as the evening's agenda was perhaps too full. COMMISSION 1995 WORK PLAN Chair Sorenson asked for items the Commission would like addressed in the coming year. The following items were identified along with the meeting the Commission will tentatively address them: Adopt-a-Park/Trail/Street March Bond Status March Park Watch April Joslyn Site (invite City Manager Splinter) May Parks Tour June Other items identified were Tree Board, bike trails, and skating rink report. OTHER BUSINESS There was a discussion regarding the Earle Brown Days parade. Recreation Director Mavis indicated the parade committee had met, and is need of funding for the parade. • Commissioners agreed that the parade was a positive event for the city, one that promoted a sense of community spirit and pride. A motion was made by Commissioner Russell, seconded by Commissioner Lasman directing Public Services Coordinator Glasoe send a letter to the local Lion's Club asking that they maintain their financial support of the parade to the best of their abilities. The motion passed. SET MEETING DATE The next meeting will be March 21, 1995, 6:30 p.m. in Conference Room A of City Hall. MEETING ADJOURNED Commissioner Shinnick made a motion, seconded by Commissioner Peterson to adjourn the meeting at 8:21 p.m. The motion passed. 9 City of Brooklyn Center A great place to start. The Commission feels the continuation of the parade is important for our community. They feel it is an event that promotes a sense of community spirit, pride, and tradition. • As a long time sponsor of the parade, the Commission recognizes and appreciates your past contributions and, by formal motion, urges you to continue sponsorship of the event "to the best of your financial capabilities". The Commission feels that without the continued support of groups like yours, the parade will have to be significantly scaled back or cancelled.
