HomeMy WebLinkAbout1992 05-19 PRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION MAY 19, 1992 CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER Chairperson Sorenson recreation commission ROLL CALL Chairperson Sorenson, Pollock and Rickart. present were Director Councilmembers Jerry called the meeting of the park and to order at 7:30 p.m. Commissioners Shinnick, Russell, Mead, Vice Chairman Peterson was excused. Also of Recreation Arnie Mavis, City Pedlar and Dave Rosene and Personnel Coordinator Geralyn Barone. APPROVAL OF MINUTES APRIL 21, 1992 Chairperson Sorenson asked for a motion to approve the minutes. A motion was made by commissioner Shinnick and seconded by Commissioner Russell to approve the minutes. The motion carried. REDUCED RATES FOR WATER SLIDE Councilperson Rosene wondered whether something could be done to reduce membership rates for low income families. There was a discussion about this idea with the general consensus being that this could be a problem, especially with determining who is eligible. The Director of Recreation mentioned that we do have Bargain Days now; the first Monday, second Wednesday, third Friday of the month. After some discussion, it was determined to make every Monday except legal holidays a Bargain Day. HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION PRIORITIZATION PLAN, Personnel Coordinator Barone explained how the Human Rights commission came up with their prioritization plan and the basics of how it works. 'She went over the form and answered questions about it. A general discussion of the system followed and Commissioner Rickart mentioned there could be some problems with this plan. Personnel Coordinator, Barone agreed, but felt these problems could be worked out. Chairman Sorenson thought maybe it would be best to look over the forms and give some feedback to Personnel Coordinator Barone. She agreed to help with this. It was then agreed upon by the commissioners to put this plan on the September agenda but the commissioners should give their feedback to Personnel Coordinator Barone by Friday, June 9. -1- '4 J CHAIRPERSON ELECTION, Councilperson Pedlar reported on a resolution being looked at by the city council in which the chairperson of the various commissions would be elected by the members of the commission. A general discussion of this resolution followed. MISSISSIPPI RIVER PROJECT Director of Recreation Mavis gave a brief talk on the Mississippi River Project. He mentioned that Hennepin County was buying up land along the Mississippi River and someday would take over Riverridge Park as part of the county trail system. This would all fit in with the Mississippi River Project. He also mentioned the Park and Recreation Commission needed to pass a resolution that they were in favor of this project. A motion was made by Commissioner Shinnick and seconded by Commissioner Russell that Brooklyn Center should be a part of this project. The motion passed. SHINGLE CREEK CLEAN UP Commissioner Pollock reported that the second annual Shingle Creek Clean Up was a success. Fifty three bags of refuse were collected. She mentioned that some young people from the Brooklyn Center High School YES program participated in the clean up. She also mentioned that the Brooklyn Center Lions Club provided refreshments. Director of Recreation Mavis also mentioned that the Adopt a Park program is doing well. Chairperson Sorenson asked if we should do it again next year. Commissioner Mead said we should wait and see how Adopt A Park is doing next year and maybe incorporate the Shingle Creek Clean Up with that program. There was a general agreement to do this. Commissioner Pollock also stated that she was keeping a scrapbook about the cleanup. She also mentioned the area around the MTC garage was very messy. Councilperson Pedlar said he will see if something can be done about this. Chairperson Sorenson thanked Commissioner Pollock for her work on the cleanup and said what a good job everyone did. OTHER BUSINESS Director of Recreation Mavis said that Centerbrook Golf Course was off to a good start with the number of rounds a little ahead of last year. He also reported on the waterslide and that the use of the waterslide was very good. He also stated that the people using the waterslide were very happy with it. Director of Recreation Mavis then went on to give a brief talk on how he was asking for money for playground equipment for two parks in the 1993 budget. He felt that the two parks should be Freeway and Northport. There was some discussion about this matter and Chairperson Sorenson said we should wait until the budget is approved and then make a final decision. s -2- ~ 1 \ Commissioner Russell made a motion that there be no meetings in June, July and August. It was seconded by commissioner Mead. The motion passed. Chairperson Sorenson asked if there was anything else. After no comments were made, Chairperson Sorenson asked for a motion to adjourn. Commissioner Mead made a motion to adjourn which was seconded by Commissioner Pollock. The motion passed. The Brooklyn Center Park and Recreation Commission adjourned at 9:35 p.m. • • -3-
