Skeels. Also present was Director of Recreation Arnie Mavis.
Commissioner Propst was excused from this evening's meeting, and
Commissioner Burnes was absent.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES NOVEMBER 15. 1988
There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson and seconded by
Commissioner Skeels to approve the minutes of the November 15,
1988, park and recreation meeting. The motion passed.
OTHER BUSINESS
Chairman Sorenson inquired if any action had been taken in
regards to the Born Again Jocks program. The director of
recreation responded that so far not a great deal of movement had
taken place, but he was still talking with other park and
recreation directors about starting such a program. Commissioner
Mead said a center with a gym open during the day was a key to
the program as well as a good leader. Commissioner Skeels
mentioned a good recruiter was needed to get people in the
program. Commissioner Pollock said she would be going to a
senior meeting in Robbinsdale, and she would see if she could get
some feedback about the program. She also wanted to be sure
women were included. Chairman Sorenson said we should continue
to see if something could be done to have this program.
The director of recreation reported the golf course had 35,000
rounds of golf and $30,000 was paid on the mortgage. He stated
this was far above the projected first year operation.
The director of recreation said the area between the Little
League fields that had been covered with agricultural lime was in
bad shape and becoming dangerous to walk on. There was a motion
by Commissioner Skeels and seconded by Commissioner Pollock to
recommend to the City Council that that area be blacktopped at a
cost of no more than $5,000. The motion passed.
The director of recreation gave a report on the skating rinks.
He said attendance at the skating rinks was average and a final
report would be given at the end of skating season.
1-17-89 -1-
Commissioner Sorenson asked how the studies were doing. The
director of recreation said both the space study and Twin Lake
study were progressing and the commission should be hearing about
them soon.
Commissioner Mead reported his neighbors were very happy that the
sidewalks in Northport park were being plowed, and he went on to
say "thank you" for this being done.
RECESS
The commission recessed at 8:27 p.m. and reconvened at 8:35 p.m.
COMMISSION PLAN OF ACTION
The commission continued to review each of the items on the
November summary of the survey of community needs and issues
related to Brooklyn Center parks and recreation. The commission
discussed the entire list, and Chairman Sorenson added Born Again
Jocks program to the list. There was a consensus of the
commissioners that the current list would be narrowed down into a
more workable list at the next meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson and seconded by
Commissioner Mead to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
The Brooklyn Center park and recreation commission adjourned at
9:35 p.m.
