HomeMy WebLinkAbout1989 01-17 PRMMINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION C OMISSION 0 FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE OF MINNESOTA REGULAR SESSION JANUARY 17, 1989 CITY HALL CALL TO ORDER Chairman Sorenson called the meeting to order at 7:45 p.m. ROLL CALL Chairman Sorenson, Commissioners Mead, Peterson, Pollock, and Skeels. Also present was Director of Recreation Arnie Mavis. Commissioner Propst was excused from this evening's meeting, and Commissioner Burnes was absent. APPROVAL OF MINUTES NOVEMBER 15. 1988 There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson and seconded by Commissioner Skeels to approve the minutes of the November 15, 1988, park and recreation meeting. The motion passed. OTHER BUSINESS Chairman Sorenson inquired if any action had been taken in regards to the Born Again Jocks program. The director of recreation responded that so far not a great deal of movement had taken place, but he was still talking with other park and recreation directors about starting such a program. Commissioner Mead said a center with a gym open during the day was a key to the program as well as a good leader. Commissioner Skeels mentioned a good recruiter was needed to get people in the program. Commissioner Pollock said she would be going to a senior meeting in Robbinsdale, and she would see if she could get some feedback about the program. She also wanted to be sure women were included. Chairman Sorenson said we should continue to see if something could be done to have this program. The director of recreation reported the golf course had 35,000 rounds of golf and $30,000 was paid on the mortgage. He stated this was far above the projected first year operation. The director of recreation said the area between the Little League fields that had been covered with agricultural lime was in bad shape and becoming dangerous to walk on. There was a motion by Commissioner Skeels and seconded by Commissioner Pollock to recommend to the City Council that that area be blacktopped at a cost of no more than $5,000. The motion passed. The director of recreation gave a report on the skating rinks. He said attendance at the skating rinks was average and a final report would be given at the end of skating season. 1-17-89 -1- Commissioner Sorenson asked how the studies were doing. The director of recreation said both the space study and Twin Lake study were progressing and the commission should be hearing about them soon. Commissioner Mead reported his neighbors were very happy that the sidewalks in Northport park were being plowed, and he went on to say "thank you" for this being done. RECESS The commission recessed at 8:27 p.m. and reconvened at 8:35 p.m. COMMISSION PLAN OF ACTION The commission continued to review each of the items on the November summary of the survey of community needs and issues related to Brooklyn Center parks and recreation. The commission discussed the entire list, and Chairman Sorenson added Born Again Jocks program to the list. There was a consensus of the commissioners that the current list would be narrowed down into a more workable list at the next meeting. ADJOURNMENT There was a motion by Commissioner Peterson and seconded by Commissioner Mead to adjourn the meeting. The motion passed.
