The Director of Parks and Recreation stated that
approximately two dozen entries had been submitted,
primarily from elementary and junior high school
students. He noted that other non-students had also
submitted entries. He briefly reviewed the rules of the
contest, commenting that entries are to be judged by the
Park and Recreation Commission on the basis of skill,
creativeness , imagination and applicability.
In response to an inquiry from Commissioner Schroeder,
the Director of Parks and Recreation explained that the
decision must be made prior to December 20 so that the
winner can be announced in the Brooklyn Center Post on
December 23.
A lengthy discussion ensued relative to various guide-
lines to follow in judging the entries. It was agreed
that the design selected should incorporate the City's
logo.
Chairman Johnson left the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
Further discussion ensued relative to each of the
submitted entries. Following the discussion it was
agreed that the Commission should hold a brief recess
and then assemble for their planned Park Service Area
group discussions and later in the meeting reassemble
to determine a contest winner.
The Brooklyn Center Park and Recreation Commission
recessed at 7:20 p.m. and resumed at 7:30 p.m.
Following the recess the Commission broke up into
Park Service Area groups to review and evaluate the
needs and deficiencies of neighborhood parks.
Following the group discussion the Commission met in
the City Hall lunchroom and further reviewed and
evaluated Park Logo Contest entries. Following the
review and an extensive discussion, it was the
consensus of the Commission that the entry submitted
by Chris Polis, 6300 Brooklyn Drive, be incorporated
into a logo containing a Community Center outline and
that that entry be declared the winner.
Following the declaration of a Park Logo Contest winner,
the meeting was adjourned. The Brooklyn Center Park
and Recreation Commission adjourned at 9:20 p.m.
