Minutes of the proceedings of the
Park and Recreation Commission of the
CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY
OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA
September 13. 1972
The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and was
called to order by Chairman Don Reichel at 7:40 P. M.
Members present were Don Reichel, Roger Pickering, Henrietta
Anderson, Earl Larson and william Anthony. Also present were staff
members Gene nagel, Arnie Mavis and Doug Bryant.
The minute's of the previous meeting of July 12, 1972, were approved
as recorded.
For the first order of business, Chairman Reichel commented that
the joint meeting between the City Council and the Park and Rec-
reation Commission was productive and beneficial. Commission
members generally agreed that a meeting of this type should be held
on a regular basis. A motion was made by Commissioner Larsen to
request a meeting with the City Council at least twice per year,
preferably once in the fall and spring to exchange ideas. The
motion was seconded by Henrietta Anderson and carried unanimously.
The next item on the agenda was a report from staff members on the
existing recreation activities and a discussion of the proposed
Fall Program. Arnie Mavis and Doug Bryant reported and program
brochures were distributed.
Director Gene Hagel next brought commission members up to date on
park developments including tennis court bids for Kylawn, Grand-
view and West Palmer Park and transplanting of 28 trees donated by
local citizens.
At this time the Shingle Creek Study by Brauer & Associates was
opened for discussion. Commissioners commented on the various as-
pects of the study noting that the natural character of the creek
can be preserved while also providing for modified-maintained
areas. The functional aspect of providing for pedestrians and
bicyclists was also noted.

After discussion a motion was made by Commissioner Anderson and
seconded by Commissioner Larsen to approve the Master Plan Concept
for the Brooklyn Center Shingle Creek Trailway as prepared by
Brauer and Associates and to recommend its approval to the City
Council. The motion was carried.
A brief discussion was held regarding the possibility of providing
camping facilities at River Ridge Park. Discussion was tabled
pending further study.
The Director announced that the Annual Fall Conference of the
Minnesota Recreation and Park Association is being held at the
Nicollet Hotel November 8, 9, & 10, and further that special
meetings are planned for Commission and Board members.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:15 P. M.
