Park and Recreation Commission of the
CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY
OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA,
May 5, 1971
Members of the Park and Recreation Commission met to tour the
Wood Lake Nature Interpretive Center in Richfield, Minnesota.
Members present were: Don Reichal, Earl Larsen, Ruth Lind, and
Bruce Morrow. Members of the Conservation Commission who attended
were: Audrey Mossberg, Carl Gross, and Bill Price.
Mr. Don Fondrick, Wood Lake Manager Naturalist conducted the group
on a tour of the grounds and facilities while answering questions
and discussing various features of the Center. Questions and
discussion dealt with construction costs, operating budget, present
and proposed programming, public acceptance, staffing, wildlife,
and wildlife management.
The Commission returned to the City Hall at 8:55 P.M. whereupon
the meeting was called to order by Chairman, Don Reichel. Members
present were; Don Reichel, Earl Larsen, Ruth Lind, and Bruce
Morrow.
The Director read a letter from Carl Gross, Secretary of the
Brooklyn Center Lions Club, requesting permission for the use of
Brooklane Park as the site for the Second Annual Lions Days Carnival
to be held August 16-22, 1971.
Discussion followed at which time concern was expressed regarding
traffic `and pedestrian safety at the intersection of Brooklyn
Boulevard and 65th Avenue, the reaction of the neighborhood resi-
dents to a carnival atmosphere, the question of adequate parking
space, and the question of sufficient space for setting up the
carnival rides and concessions.
In answer to the question of clean-up and damage to Grandview Park
under similar circumstances last year, it was noted that the turf
had suffered no apparent damage and that the Lions Club had
cooperated fully in the clean-up and maintenance of the area.
After further discussion it was the consensus of the commission
that their primary concern was with the park and park property
and the apprehensions discussed previously should.be resolved by
other facets of city government.
After a call for a motion by the Chairman, it was moved by Bruce
Morrow and seconded by Earl Larsen to recommend that the Lions
Club be permitted the use of Brooklane Park as requested. Motion
carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 P.M.
