HomeMy WebLinkAbout1970 08-14 PRMM rr' _ Minutes of the proceedings of the Park and Recreation Commission of the CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA August 14, 1970 The Park and Recreation Commission met in special session and was called to order by Chairman Don Reichel at 7:30 P.M. Members present were Don Reichel, Henrietta Anderson, Wayne Finley, Earl Larsen, and Bruce Morrow. Also present were Gene Hagel and Arnie Mavis. The meeting was called at the request of the City Council to discuss and re-evaluate priorities for park capital improvements. The Director reported that the balance of the Capital Improvement fund is approximately $175,000.00 It was noted that the cost of the proposed covered ice facility would essentially deplete this amount. It was also noted that this amount would complete the following improvements: Tennis Courts at Kylawn and Grandview Parks, blacktopping of equipment areas, walkways, basketball courts, volleyball courts, and parking areas at all parks, backboards and standards for basketball and volleyball at all parks, parking barri- cades and benches at all parks, plus grading, landscaping, baseball backstops, softball backstops, fencing, and bleachers at Central Park. Considerable discussion ensued and the following questions were raised: If the money is spent for the ice shelter when can the park improvements be expected? Can funds for tennis courts be provided in the 1971 budget appropriation? What other improvements could be provided for in the 1971 budget? Could there be a Bond referendum for an ice shelter or arena? Alternatives were consi- dered such as (a) Bond referendum for Park improvements, (b) Pro- ceed with the ice shelter per existing plan, (c) Build the ice shelter as stage #1 toward an arena - and if so- where? (d) Bond referendum for Arena. After further discussion the members of the Commission agreed unanimously to submit the following statement to the City Council: "The Park and Recreation Commission feels it would be inappropriate to make a decision now to deplete the existing funds on park improve- ments or construction of the ice shelter. M, -2- The Commission further feels that a meeting of the Park and Recreation Commission and the City council is necessary: 1) to tour existing parks and playgrounds, 2) to discuss progress of Cap- ital Improvements to date, and 3) to discuss future plans." The staff was directed to proceed with plans for the tour during the early part of September. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 P.M. • • 0
