Park and Recreation Commission of the
CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY
OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA
March 18, 1970
The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and
was called to order by Chairman Don Reichel at 8:00 P.M.
Members present were Don Reichel, Henrietta Anderson, Wayne
Finley, Earl Larsen, Ruth Lind, Bruce Morrow, and Warren Olson.
Also present were Eugene Hagel, Arnie Mavis, and Kathy Flesher.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded.
Former commissioner Leslie Hagen was present to receive a
plaque in recognition for his service on the Board. Chairman
Don Reichel presented the plaque "For his outstanding contri-
bution of time, talent, and service as a member of the Park
and Recreation Commission, 1956 to 1970".
Plans for the summer program were next reviewed by Arnie Mavis
and Kathy Flesher. It was noted that playground leaders will
be in attendance at all playgrounds for half-days only. Play-
grounds to the west side of Brooklyn Center will be staffed in
the mornings. Playgrounds to the east of the City will be
staffed in the afternoons. During the period when the play-
ground supervisory staff is not at the playground, special
activities will be scheduled such as puppetry, archery, tiny
tots, girl's softball, and possibly golf. Other activities
are also being considered at this time. It was also reported
-that the volunteer program for Junior Leaders is being expan-
ded for. this summer. This will be to accomodate boys and
girls from 7th grade and up. Special training sessions will
be organized and it is expected that these people will work
a pre-determined number of hours at a playground, culminating
in a recognition ceremony at the end of the season.
The Commission next reviewed and discussed the proposed proto-
type park shelter building. Several factors were discussed
such as size of the building and its relation to the size of
the park, as well as the present and future use of the shelter
buildings. The Commissioners requested that they be kept
informed as to proposed sizes and building materials as the
plans develop. After discussion the motion was made by Warren
Olson, seconded by Henrietta Anderson, to approve the concept
of the prototype park shelter building as presented. Motion
carried.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 P.M.
