HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968 12-03 PRMMinutes of the proceedings of the Park and Recreation Commission of the CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA December 3, 1968 The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Don Reichel, Chairman, at 8:00 P.M. Members present were Don Reichel, Paul Bullen, Frank Irvin, Ruth Lind, and Bruce Morrow. Also present were Eugene Hagel and Raymond Ecklund. The minutes of the meeting of September 4, 1968, were approved as recorded. The Board reviewed the Park Capital Improvement Program as proposed prior to the bond election, and discussed specific items with regard to priority. Location of major facilities and general time sche- dules were also discussed. A general discussion of construction and operation of Community Centers and Swimming Pools followed. The Director submitted for discussion a proposal for the formation of a city-wide Teen Advisory Board. The purpose of the Teen Advisory Board would be to work with the professional staff in planning, coor- dinating, and advising activities for teens. This would pertain to city-wide programs as well as those proposed for the new center. It is proposed that appointments to the Teen Advisory Board be made on a school disirict basis possibly on the recommendation of the school principal. It is further suggested that the Teen Advisory Board be created by ordinance, with appointments to be made by the Mayor and Council. The Park and Recreation Board concurred with the proposal and requested the staff to further pursue the matter. A proposal for re-structuring and re-classifying of positions within the Park and Recreation Depart- ment was discussed. No official action was taken. Assistant Director Ray Ecklund reviewed the Winter Program with the Board, noting changes and additions that had been made. This was followed by a slide presentation of recreation activities and a discussion of program planning and objectives. A general dis- cussion followed. Page 2 It was reported that the City Band is making progress. New members are being added and six concerts have been played with others tentatively scheduled. The Childrens Chorus has reached a maximum of 70 members with a waiting list of children wanting to join. Four appearances have been made with four more scheduled. The Adult Chorus has a membership of thirty but more are needed. Plains are going.ahead to present a variety show late in March. The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 P.M. • ("1 0 i c •
