The Chairman announced that the meeting was called to hear the
comments and recommendation of interested citizens with regard
to the Twin Lake Beach property. Approximately 35 people
were present.
The following comments were made:
"We are concerned with the lack of open space and with the
lack of safety at swimming sites."
0 "We are losing valuable and cherished open space."
"We are proposing that the city acquire all or part of the
beach property for park and open space area."
"We want the Park and Recreation Board to be concerned about
access to the lake and safety problems regarding access."
"We're concerned about the safety of youngsters on the tracks
near the pole yard."
"W<-:! are afraid that children will be attracted too much to
the pole yards (if the park is in the proposed location)."
"The open view of the beach area as park is less subject to
vandalism than the other area which will be hidden and more
difficult to supervise."
"Apartments will increase boats on the lake."
"An attractive park in view of the highway is good advertising
for Brooklyn Center."
40 "We are asking that the Board recommend to the council that
the city acquire this for park and recreation purposes.
"The horsepower of boats on the lake should be limited."
it
"There is a possibility of adding approximately 8 to 12
S acres of state highway land to this - making a total
( of about 20 acres." 0
"Even if the city took only a portion of this - 4 to 4'h acres-
it would leave the balance for residential."
"The North area is poor land; swampy, poor access."
"The land is so poor that the city will probably get it for
nothing later on anyway."
"It will take a long time to fill the land and we will have
to wait many years before we get a park. Look how long it
took to fix Lions Park."
"Not getting this land now is going to affect the lives of
our children for many years to come."
"We are specifically asking that this be developed first
as a park - a beach could come later."
,,we think the park should come first but we also think the
beach is important and should be kept by the city."
"This property can be used as a park immediately."
"The Northport Association is on record as being in favor
of a park and beach."
After hearing all comments the chairman announced that this
matter would be considered by the Park and Recreation Commission
at a later meeting and the recommendation of the Commission
would be forwarded to the council.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:20 P.M.
