HomeMy WebLinkAbout1968 05-22 PRM.1 Minutes of the proceedings of the Park and Recreation Commission of the CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA May 22, 1968 The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and was called to order by Don Reichel, Chairman, at 8:00 p.m. Members present were Don Reichel, Paul Bullen, Frank Irvin, Ruth Lind, Bruce Morrow, and Warren Olson. Also present were Eugene Hagel, and Raymond Ecklund. The minutes of the regular meeting of January 24, and the special meeting of March 6, 1968, were approved as recorded. The chairman briefly reviewed the history of the Earle Brown farm development with regard to park acquisition and improvements, followed by a discussion with Mayor Cohen, who brought the Comm- ission up to date on problems connected with the property. Assistant Director Ray Ecklund reported on the coming Summer program, noting the increased number of activities for teens. A question and answer period followed. Director Gene Hagel reported.as follows: a. The Teen Coffee House, proposed for the church at 62nd and Xerxes has been halted, due to problems with the church's insurance and also because the church has been put up for sale. b. The preliminary plan showing the layout for the park at 65th and Bryant was presented and discussed. c. The access road into the proposed Mississippi River Park south of the freeway bridge has been scheduled for this summer. d. The design for the development of Palmer Lake is in the hands of Brauer and Associates, and should be ready to view in a few weeks. e. The house located in Bellvue Park (803 55th Ave. No.) is being discontinued as a rental property as of July 1. ° to f. Improvements under way or planned for the near future are installation of playground equipment at East and West Palmer Parks, backstops at West Palmer and Willow Lane, grading and landscaping at 65th and Bryant, East and West Palmer, Lakeside, Marlin, Riverdale, and Northport tennis courts, and the planting of 100 trees in the parks. g. Major equipment acquisitions for the year include a tractor with cab and front end loader, 3-ton dump truck, van truck mower sharpener, rototiller, radial arm saw and a four wheel trailer to be used as a portable stage. h. Land acquisition under way is the Edl ng parcel needed to complete Lions Park. It is expected that this will be purchased in the near future. i. The Park and Recreation Department has been work- ing with the Lions Club in preparation for the dedication of Lions Park on Sunday, May 26. j. Two separate Baton, Tap, and Ballet Revues were held this past week at Brooklyn Center High School. Nearly 400 persons attended each performance. k. The Annual Children's Chorus Concert and Teen Drama C presentation is scheduled for Friday, May 24, at Earle Brown School. The property and swimming beach at Lower Twin Lake was dis- cussed in regard to its possible acquisition and use as a park and municipal beach. After discussion a motion was made by Paul Bullen and seconded by Frank Irvin that the Park and Recreation Commission go on record as having no interest in acquiring and operating the beach. Motion carried. The possible acquisition and use of the Presbyterian Church, located at 62nd and Xerxes, for a Community Recreation Center was discussed. Motion made by Ruth Lind and seconded by Warren Olson to advise the City Council that the Park and Recreation Commission is most interested in investigating the use of the church for a recreation center. Motion carried. The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 p.m. • -2-
