+y Park and Recreation Commission of the
CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY
OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA
September 27, 1967
The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and was
called to order by Paul Bullen, Chairman, at 7:35 p.m.
Members present were Paul Bullen, Les Hagen,• Frank Irvin, Bruce
Morrow, Warren Olson and Don Reichel. Also present were Eugene
Hagel, Ray Ecklund and Ester Hammne.
The minutes of the previous meeting of July 26, 1967, were approved
as recorded.
The Fall Program Schedules were distributed and discussed and
additions were noted. These include Youth Hosteling, Teen Drama,
Chinese Cooking and Christmas Crafts.
Names and methods to select names for two new park areas were
discussed. The two parks are located at 65th and Bryant and on
Marlin Drive. It was suggested that the children at Fair Oaks School
be invited to suggest names for the park on Marlin Drive and to
submit a list of suggested names for both parks for consideration
at the next meeting.
Mr. Ecklund gave a slide presentation showing the many varied
activities for all age groups conducted by the Park and Recreation
Department.
A general discussion of teen programming was held with Miss Hammen
noting new programs, coordination and cooperation of programs with
other agencies, attendance, publicity and future programming.
The organization and conduct of the present boys tackle football
program was discussed. After discussion it was moved by Frank Irvin
and seconded by Don Reichel that the Park and Recreation Commission
set up guidelines and regulations for the organization and conduct
of programs offered by other organizations when using park facilities.
Motion carried. The staff was instructed to present a list of
proposed guidelines at the next meeting.
Suggested topics for discussion for future commission meetings were
reviewed by members of the staff. The following subjects, with
speakers when available, were suggested:
*Suburban Recreation Association and Recreation in the Suburbs
*Landscape Architect/Park Planning - Trends in Park Design
*Water Pollution and its relation to water-oriented recreation
*Movie - National Recreation and Park Association "People...
Park ...and Recreation"
*More slides of recreation activities

Numerous questions were raised regarding the Capital Improvements
Review Board and its coming report. Motion made by Frank Irvin and
seconded by Bruce Morrow to request that the C.I.R.B. Chairman or a
member attend the next meeting of the Commission to bring the
Commission up to date on C.I.R.B. progress. Motion carried.
Considerable interest-was expressed regarding the proposed-Marina
on-the Mississippi. The staff was requested to report on this at
the next meeting.
After a discussion of a Metropolitan area salary survey, a proposed
Art Exhibit in the council chambers and the proposed 1968 budget,
the meeting was adjourned at 11:00 p.m.
