Park and Recreation Commission of the
CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER in the COUNTY
OF HENNEPIN and the STATE OF MINNESOTA
July 26, 1967
The Park and Recreation Commission met in regular session and was
called to order by Paul Bullen, Chairman, at 7:45 p.m.
Members present were Paul Bullen, Frank Irvin, Ruth Lind, Warren
Olson and Don Reichel. Also present: Eugene Hagel.
The minutes of the previous meeting of May 24, 1967, were approved
as recorded.
Discussion centered on the proposed recreation, park, and capital
improvements budget for 1968. Suggestions were noted regarding
various items including the teen program, swimming and the use of
satellites during the summer program.
A brief report of the summer recreation program was presented. The
Director reviewed the new registration procedure and noted the
overall general increase in program registration and participation.
The Teen Traveling Theater is presently giving performances of
"Cinderblossom" in all the parks, indoor art classes at Northport
School are proving to be quite successful, baseball shows an
increase of ten teams making a_total of 685 boys playing on 43
teams, and 11 teenagers qualified for their Red Cross Lifesaving
Certificate.
The Director reported that the installation of playground
equipment was nearly completed, the baseball diamonds and backstops
at Evergreen Park are being used extensively in connection with
the adult softball program, the hood and extension on the backstop
at Kylawn is completed, the tennis courts at Northport are
completed and are being used steadily, and a sign for Grandview
Park will be erected soon through the courtesy of the Women's
Weight Watchers Club.
The memo from Mayor Cohen regarding park facilities was discussed.
It was agreed by the Commission that before a meeting is
scheduled with the Palmer Lake residents more information should
be obtained regarding financing - particularly as to when funds
may be available and in what amount so that a time schedule could
be presented along with a plan for development.

The future development of the western half of Xylawn Park was
discussed. The Commission agreed to attempt to preserve the
"natural" environment indefinitely and to avoid any major filling
of the area. It was suggested that a specific area be graded and
ditched to effect proper drainage and some clearing of brush
should be done to allow movement of people and maintenance equip-
ment.
After a brief discussion of C. I. R. B. progress, the meeting was
adjourned.
The meeting adjourned at 10:45 p.m.
