VILLAGE OF BROOKLYN CENTER
RECREATION COMISSION MEETING
September 28, 1965
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission
was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, September
28, 1965.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Gerald Gilbertson.
Other members present were Polly Hartin, John Leary, and Bruce
Morrow. Also present were Gene Bagel, Ray Ecklund and Ester
Hammon.
The minutes of the previous meeting of July 27, 1965, were
approved as recorded.
The Assistant Director reported on the Fall program of activities.
Nearly 8,000 program schedules have been distributed through the
schools. Response has been generally good, with a drop in
attendance at the outdoor activities, due to unfavorable weather.
It was recommended that the skating rink at Evergreen Park be
cancelled this year due to the very little use it received last
year and also because of the present problems encountered in
completing the necessary grading at the Park. .
The National Recreation Congress is being held in Minneapolis
the week of October 3.
The Teen Director reported on the progress being made in teen
programming. The Teen Club at Garden City School held its first
event of the season on September 24 and was attended by approximately
150 boys and girls. The new club for the Anoka and Brooklyn Center
District will be held on Wednesday evenings at Brooklyn Center High
School and is now in the process of being organized.
The need for program equipment for the Teen Club was discussed.
Motion made by Bruce Morrow and seconded by Polly Hartin to request
the lark Board to allow funds from concession profits for the
purchase of table tennis tables, bumper pool tables, card tables,
and related game equipment. Motion carried.
The proposed ordinance establishing a Park and Recreation Commission
was presented. Motion made by Bruce Morrow and seconded by Polly
Hartin to table discussion on the ordinance until the next meeting.
Motion carried.

The Park and Recreation Department is presently working with the
Recreation Department at the University of Minnesota to obtain
students who will be assigned the task of designing park areas.
The specific area to be involved is the proposed Central Community
Park east and north of Garden City Park. The Recreation Department
will be expected to accept such expanses as transportation for the
students and the cost of materials for building a scale model of
the area. This is not expected to;exceed $25.00. Motion made
by Bruce Morrow and seconded by Polly Martin to approve the project
and to allow the necessary expenses as indicated. Motion carried.
Mr. Larry Goga presented a request to the Board that the Board
seriously consider the installation of lighting for an athletic
field. It was pointed out that many adults as well as children
would be able to make use of the lights in many different prograias
and that it would help to expand the recreation program in same
activities. The Board agreed to give the request more consideration.
The Director presented a report of capital expenditures for the year
pointing out that several costs had exceeded the estimates and as a
result not all projects would be accomplished as planned.
