RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
May 13, 1965
MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation commission
was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Thursday, May 13, 1965.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Gerald Gilbertson.
Other members present were Leslie Hagen, Polly Hartin, Frank
Irvin, John Leary, and Bruce Morrow. Also present were Gene .
Hagel and Ray Ecklund.
The minutes of the regular meeting of February 23 and the Joint
meeting of April 14, 1965, were approved as recorded.
The ;director reported on new summer program plans as follows:
A registration fee of 504 will be charged for summer
playgrounds. This will eliminate all charges for
craft materials.
A supervised program is being added at the Brooklyn Center
High School areas. on Tuesdays hnd Thursdays.
Creative Drama classes are being added and will be held
at all elementary schools.
Tennis classes and tournaments are planned for both the
Brooklyn Center High School and Willow Lane Courts.
Adult classes and leagues will also be offered.
Tee ball for 8 and 9 year olds will become a permanent
part of the program this year.
A special swimming, diving, and life saving class for
teens only is being added to the schedule.
The age limit for swimming instruction has been lowered
to include seven year olds and first graders.
The Assistant Director reported on the success and growth of the
Teen Program. The proposal to employ a Program Supervisor in
charge of teen and women's and girl's activities was discussed.
After discussion it was moved by Francis Irvin and seconded by
Leslie Hagen to recommend that Miss Ester Hammen be appointed
to the above position as follows:
On a temporary basis for June and July at the rate of
$400.00 per month. On a permanent basis beginning
August 1 at the rate of $450.00 per month. Motion
carried.

Motion made by John Leary and seconded by Polly Hartin to
authorize the chairman to sign the agreement with the Spring
Lake Park Bus Co. for bus service for swimming instruction
classes. Motion carried.
Further reports were given regarding Band and Chorus Concerts,
progress of tennis court construction, and grading of Evergreen
Park.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
