RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
November 23, 1965
'MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission
was held at Northport School at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, November 23, 1-_-65
The meeting was held at Northport School to give Board members an
opportunity to hear the Civic Band, which gave a short Concert for
the Northport P.T.A.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Gerald Gilbertson at
8:20 P.M. Other members present were Les Hagen, Frank Irvin,
John Leary, and John Wingard.
The minutes of the previous meeting of September 28, 1965, were
approved as recorded.
Winter program schedules were distributed. The Assistant Director
noted some of the new activities which include a Judo Class, Mens
Broomball, three-man basketball, plus the winter skating program
which includes figure skating at six rinks and the addition of
organized hockey programs at Kylawn and Northport Parks. Program
schedules are being distributed through the schools.
The Teen Director reported on teen activities being offered. These
include, in addition to the Teen Clubs, roller skating, swimming,
basketball, bowling, gym nights, drama club and ski trips. Other
special activities will be organized as interest develops. A club
for women is also being organized. It is scheduled to meet at the
Library and will feature such programs as tours, parties, lectures
demonstrations, crafts, etc. The first meeting is scheduled for
early in January.
The proposed Park and Recreation ordinance was discussed. Motion
made by Les Hagen and seconded by Frank Irvin to terminate
discussion at this time and that each member convey his thoughts
and opinions at the meeting with the Village Council. Motion carried
The format for future meetings was discussed. It was agreed that
time should be set aside at each meeting to discuss topics pertinent
to parks and recreation. Suggested topics are tackle football,
Little League, County Parks, suburban recreation, swimming pools,
and recreation buildings.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:45 P.M.
