HomeMy WebLinkAbout1963 03-26 RECMVILLAGE OF BROOKLYN CENTER RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING March 26, 1963 MINUTES The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, March 26, 1963. Members present were Les Hagen, Bruce Morrow, and John Wingard. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded. The Assistant Director reported on the Winter and Spring programs stating that registrations are increasing in most of the activities. Boys basketball increased to 60 boys participating, Baton has 187, Ballet, which is a new program, has 169 registered. The Teen Charm Clinic has 38, Adult Dance has 18 couples, the Bridge Club has 20 couples, and generally, interest and attendance is good in all activities. Some preliminary plans for the Summer Program were announced: Supervised programs will be held for the first time at Orchard Lane Park, Day Camping will be extended one week longer, Ballet Classes will be held at the playgrounds, special bus trips will be scheduled to points of interest, and a bigger and improved Puppetry program will 7::)e held due to the new Travelling Puppet Theater donated by that! Firs. Jaycees. It was agreed that since the playground will not be available at Benson School, we should attempt to provide some specialized activities in the Northeast corner of the Village. This may consist of puppetry, archery, ballet and/or baseball. Salary schedules for playground leaders will continue the same as last year. The question of providing a required uniform type of dress for playground leaders was discussed. Motion made by John Wingard and seconded by Bruce Morrow, to require that the leaders wear a special shirt, printed with the Recreation Department name, ai-A that the first shirt be provided free and the leaders buy the second one. Motion carried. A 0 0 It was announced that Brooklyn Center is hosting the Annual Suburban Playground Leaders' Institute on June 13, at Earle Brown School and Grandview Park. Approximately 250 Playground leaders will be attending from most of the Minneapolis and St. Paul suburbs The Civic Band has begun rehearsals with an enthusiastic group of 26 musicians. It is hoped that outdoor concerts can be provided this summer. The Civic Choir composed of 25 voices, is proceeding with plans to present a modern opera "The Lowland Sea" as its annual Spring Concert. The meeting was adjourned at 10:00 P.M.
