vRECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
January 22, 1963
MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation
Commission was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M.j
Tuesday, January 22, 1963. Members present were
Janet Johnson, John Leary, and Bruce Morrow.
The Director and Assistant Director reported on winter
Program activities as follows:
Skating rinks had a very large attendance until the
sub-zero weather set in. Several adult skating parties
have already been held.
Figure Skating classes have 245 registered.
The Annual Holiday Hockey Tournament was held at the
Willow Lane, High School, and Grandview rinks. Elk
River won the trophy the second year in a row, Fridley
was runner-up.
Boys basketball has started at Willow Lane and Garden City
schools with approximately 30 boys participating.
Ballet classes have 25 registered at Northport and Garden
City schools.
Men's Basketball league gets underway this week with four
teams entered.
Civic Chorus has from 25 to 35 persons attending rehearsals
each week.
Plans are proceeding to start the Civic Band in February.
Senior Citizens Club activities are expanding with an all
time high membership of 82.
A Ski Trip to Wisconsin for High School Students is planned
for this weekend.
Skating races have been held and the local winners will
represent Brooklyn Center at the Suburban races this week-
end at Hopkins.
Boys hockey has 95 boys registered with 4 teams at Grandview
and 4 teams at Willow Lane.
A Senior Men's hockey team is entered in the Quad County
Men's Hockey League with teams from Hopkins, Roseville,
Maplewood and Columbia Heights.
Baton and Tap has 150 girls taking part at Earle Brown,
Northport, Garden City, and Willow Dane Schools.

Men's Exercise and Women's Trimnastics Classes presently
have 20 and 15 registered.
Men's and Women's volleyball has increased in participation
and league schedules are being played.
The first meeting of the Bridge Club was held with 15
couples showing interest in joining.
The Ballroom dance class has doubled-from one class last
fall to, two at the present time.
The Christmas Craft Class was not as successful as expected
due primarily to errors in timing. This will be rescheduled
next year.
Charm Clinics are being worked out with Drookdale and should
be ready to start in the near future.
Mrs. Janet Johnson has agreed to be the Recreation
dommission's delegate to the Suburban Recreation Association
for 1963.
A discussion was held to clarify the policy with regard to
adult programs. It is understood that every effort will be
made to make adult programs self-sustaining. However,
should a program fall short of this it will be up to the
judgment of the recreation director to determine whether
the program should be cancelled or not.
Copies of the Park Development Priority Schedule were
distributed and discussed.
A discussion of Curling followed. It was agreed to investigate
this as a possible addition to the nroaram_
suburban facilities, including Brooklyn Center's. It is
hoped that this will not affect the availability of Calhoun
Beach for swimming instruction. Application has already
been made for use of the beach.
It was reported that the Minneapolis Park Board has instituted
a new policy with regard to use of its facilities by non-
residents. This is expected to increase the use of all
