RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING

MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation
Commission was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M.,
Wednesday, October 10, 1962. Members present were
Lelsie Hagen, Janet Johnson, John Leary, and Bruce Morrow.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded.
Fall and Winter activities were reported as follows:
The Boy's Football program is currently being held at Willow
Lane, Northport, Grandview, and Garden City Parks on Saturday
mornings with 220 boys registered.
Baton and Tap instruction is in progress at Garden City,
Northport, and Earle Brown Schools with 135 registered.
Men's volleyball has had one meeting with attendance at
Willow Lane and Northport good for early in the season:
Earle Brown and Garden City are lower than expected.
Women's volleyball had 56 in attendance the first night at
the four schools. More are expected as the season gets underway.
The Great Books Discussion Group started its second year with
13 persons at the first session. It will hold a series of 32
meetings to read and discuss the required Second Year Readings.
The Civic Chorus has renewed its activity. The first two meetings
were down in attendance but this has started to build. The first
performance of the season is scheduled for Brookdale on November 5.
The Men's Physical Fitness class held its first meeting with 7
attending. This is down from last year's group but is expected to
grow as the weather becomes less favorable for outdoor activity.
The Women's Trimnastics started its first session with 19 registered
and appears to be quite popular.
Adult Dance Instruction started with 10 couples. More are needed
and interest has been shown by several more couples.
Efforts are being made to organize a Bridge Club. Eight couples
have expressed interest and when sufficient members have signed,
a date, time, and location will be selected.
Efforts are being made to form an Archery Club. Twelve persons
have registered. An organizational meeting is-scheduled fbr
this fall.
Arrangements for Charm Classes for teen girls and housewives are
being worked out in cooperation with Brookdale. It is hoped
this can begin yet this fall.
A full report of winter program plans will be given at the next
meeting.
It was announced that "Recreation Suburbia" will be presented at
Westwood Junior High School in St. Louis Park on Thursday evening,
October 25. All Board members are invited. This is a Suburban
Recreation Association (United Fund) project in cooperation with
suburban park and recreation departments.
The Minnesota Recreation Association Annual Fall Meeting will be
held in St Paul, November 1 and 2. Maintenance Foreman Joseph
Sienko is on the program to discuss hockey w ttr construction and
installations.

After a discussion of the National Park Conference and Park
developments, the meeting was adjourned at 10:00 P.M.
