HomeMy WebLinkAbout1962 05-22 RECMVILLAGE OF BROOKLYN CENTER RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING May 22, 1962 MINUTES The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, May 22, 1962. Members present were Les Hagen, Bruce Morrow, Janet Johnson, John Leary, and John Wingard. The minutes of the previous meeting of April 10, 1962 were approved as recorded. Copies of the Summer Program Schedules were distributed, and new and expanded programs were discussed as follows: The Director reported that playground leadership and Tee Shirt baseball will be provided for the first time this year at Bellvue Park and Garden City School. The leaders will be at Bellvue Park on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and at Garden City School on Tuesdays and Thursdays. gr6tsklyn Center will host the Annual Suburban Archery Tournament at Grandview Park on July 26. Over one hundred entries from deer suburban communities are expected. The Day Camp Program has been expanded to five weeks making it possible for seventy-five more children to attend. Provision has been made for an Adult Swimming Instruction Class if sufficient registrations are received. Golf instruction Classes for adults will be held during the daytime at Garden City Park. The Assistant Director reported that a Golf Instruction Class for teen-agers has been added and that Starlight Dances will be held on the blacktop area at Grandview Park. Negotiations are being held with the Musician's Union to provide "live" music for some of the dances. 11 V 9 0 2. Through the cooperation of Brooklyn Center High School a survey was taken recently to help determine the recreational needs and wishes of the students. The results of this will be useful for future programming. An Archery Club will be organized during the summer while classes are in session. Men's Slow Pitch Softball has expanded to two leagues of six teams each. Games are being played regularly at the Grandview Park and Northport Park diamonds. The Women's League has three teams - one less than last year. Other programs are as listed on the schedule with provision for increased participation in all activities. Facilities developments were reported as follows: The Park property adjacent to Garden City School has been topsoiled. Grading and topsoiling is under- way at Orchard Lane Park. The storm sewer and catch basin has been installed in Willow Lane Park. The major portion of grading repairs has been done in Northport Park. Most of the base work for blacktopping has been done at Garden City, Northport, Happy Hollow and Grandview Parks. The meeting was adjourned at 9:15 P.M.
