MINUTES
The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commiss-
ion was held at the Village hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday,
January 23, 1962. Members present were Les Hagen, Eleanor
Houser, Janet Johnson, John Leary, Bruce Morrow, and John
Wingard. Also present was Mayor Gordon Erickson.
The minutes of the previous meeting of November 28, 1961,
were approved as recorded.
The Director reported on the winter Program as follows:
Skating rinks are attracting large numbers of skaters
with the exception of several days when the rinks were closed
due to excessively cold weather. Eight warming houses are in
operation, three areas do not have shelters.
An increase in the number of adult skating parties is
reported, at several of the rinks.
Five Figure Skating classes at Northport, Triangle,
Willow Lane, and Garden City have 150 registered.
The Hockey program has 100 boys on 8 teams playing a
regular schedule of games.
The Minneapolis Millers Hockey team conducted a free clinic
and demonstration at Willow Lane rink on January 3. About 75
people attended.
The Second Annual Holiday Hockey Tournament was a highly
successful event. Games were played at the Triangle rink. Elk
River won first place, Brooklyn Center won second, Osseo third,
and Fridley fourth.
The Bantam Hockey Tournament was cancelled due to conflicts
with schools, clinics, and other programs.
Approximately 50 boys and girls took part in the Annual
Brooklyn Center Skating races. Winners will participate in the
Suburban races this Saturday, January 27, at Edina.
The Charm Clinics for girls at Earle Brown and Willow Lane
Schools were very popular. It is hoped that this can be expanded
next Fall to include an older age group on a regular basis.
Baton and tap instruction has about 75 girls participating
at Earle Brown, Northport, and Garden City Schools.
Basketball for Junior and Senior High boys has 30 boys
participating at Willow Lane and Garden City Schools; more are
expected to register within the next week.
Adult Ballroom Dance instruction filled to capacity almost
immediately. 25 couples meet regularly on Monday nights at
Brooklyn Center High School.

Men's Physical Fitness and Conditioning started with 11 men
registered. Several more are expected to join. The class meets
at Brooklyn Center High School.
Men's and a women's volleyball leagues have begun tournament
play at the four elementary schools. Six teams are in the men's
league and nine teams are in the women's league.
The Men's Basketball league begins play January 24. The
start was delayed due to construction difficulties at the High
School. Six teams are entered in the league.
The Brooklyn Center Civic Chorus is gaining in strength and
members. Nearly 50 adults meet weekly at the high school for
rehearsal.
The Senior Citizens Club boasts 72 members. The group
meets regularly at the Old Village Hall.
A Great Books Discussion Group meets regularly at Garden
City School. Plans are to start a new group in the Fall.
It was reported that five applications have been received for
the positon of Assistant Director. At least three of these
appear to be well qualified for the position.
The Mid-Continent Park and Recreation Conference is being held
at the University of Minnesota Continuation Center, February
12 and 13.
The use of a ball diamond at Garden City Park by the Little League
was discussed. Motion made by John Wingard and seconded by John
Leary to recommend to the Park Board that this use be granted.
Motion Carried.
A general discussion followed regarding teen programs and
problems, a Brooklyn Center Junevile Officer, and Suburban
Recreation Association activitites. No official action was taken.
The meeting was adjourned.
