HomeMy WebLinkAbout1961 09-26 RECM• • VILLAGE OF BROOKLYN CENTER RECREATAON COMMISSION MEETING September 26, 1961 MINUTES The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, September 26, 1961. Member present were Les Hagen, Bruce Morrow, and Jan Johnson. the Director gave a report on Fall activities stating that nearly 300 boys are participating in the footbal.l.program; Paintings done by the Summer Art Classes-both children and adult - is currently on exhibit in the Village Hall; Teen Dance dates have been coordinated with the High School and the Recreation Department with the Suburban Recreation Association will sponsor five dances this Fall. Men's and Women's volleyball is scheduled to begin at four schools the second week in October; Baton and tap classes have 75 girls attending; the Senior Citizen's Club has grown to over 65 members and will soon out grow the Old Village Hall. Plans have been completed for the organization of a Brooklyn Center Civic Chorus. The group will begin to hold rehearsals October 16 at Northport School and will move to the High School after construction is finished. The Great Books Discussion Group begins September 27 at Garden City School. The group is filled to capacity with over 20 persons registered. Many requests have been received to start a Men's Basketball league. Present plans are to have this going by the first of the year. Requests have also been received for an Archery Club and a Stamp Collectors Club. These will be organized this Fall and Winter. Plans are being made to co-sponsor, with the High School, a Summer Band program for young people in the Village. It is hoped that outdoor concerts can be held next summer. Creative Dancing classes for girls are being considered for after the holidays and to be held in the schools after school classes are dismissed. e The Director has been elected President of the Association of Suburban Recreation Directors. Study projects for the group for the coming year are: 1. Per Capita (Budget)expenditures for recreation and parks. 2. Metropolitan Parks 3. Fees and Charges 4. Pay rates - part-time personnel 5. Park maintenance and/or development problems 6. Communiating with your public 7. 'Playground Leaders' Institute 8. Recreation and Park legislation--new and unfamiliar 9. Interdepartmental:-,.relations within the community. The meeting was adjourned.
