RECREATION COMISSION MEETING
October 25, 1960

The regular monthly meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission
was held at the Village Hall at 8:00 P.M., Tuesday, October 25, 1960. Members
present were Les Hagen, Bruce Morrow, Cliff Wellman, and Jan Johnson.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded.
The Superintendent reported on Fall program activities as follows:
,ls Football ended Saturday, October 22. Over 200 boys participated,
compared to 80 last year. Instruction clinics and games were held at Earle
Brown, Northport, Gardens City and Willow Lane Parks. It is planned to run
the program longer with more sessions next year.
Vollevhalj for men and women got under way with 120 turning out the first
week. This number is expected to increase to at least 150 or more. The groups
are meeting each week at Earle Brown, Northport, Garden City and Willow Lane
Schools.
Baton and Tag instruction has 75 girls registered at the four schools.
Teen-qge Dances have begun with 210 attending the first Junior High dance
and 115 attending the Senior High dance. Plans are to employ a professional
dancing instructor to give instruction for the Junior High group.
Senior Citizos Club had a record 90 persons at their October meeting.
The group is gradually increasing in numbers.
Winter Program plans were discussed as follows:
Skating Rinks will operate in the same locations as last year with a total
of eleven rinks in nine locations. This includes the two hockey rinks. Hours
will be 3:00-5:00 and 6:00.9:00 on weekdays; 1:00-5:40 and 6:00-9:00 on Sundays
and vacation days; and 10:00-12:00, 1:00-5:00, 6:00-9:00 on Saturdays.
Adult Skatina Nights will be increased to include the Triangle and Willow
Larne rinks in addition to Northport. Adults only (past Junior High School age)
will be permitted on these rinks after 8:30 P.M. Saturday nights.
lure Skating Insj~ructW classes are scheduled for Triangle and North-
port rinks. Another instructor is being sought to teach at Willow Lane and
Garden City.
H0011 is expected to attract a record number of boys this year, providing
the weather is favorable. Three divisions are being planned: Pee tees for under
12; Bantam for under 14; and Midget for under 16. Arrangements have been made
with Ken Yackel and the Minneapolis Millers Hockey Team to put can a demonstra-
tion and clinic at the Willow Lane rink on December 20, 1960, at 7:00 P.M.

A Holidev Hockey Tournament is being sponsored by the Park and Recreation
Departments to be held December 28 and 29 at the Willow Lane rink. Four high
school teams have accepted the invitation to play. They are Osseo, North,
Henry. and Golden Valley. It was originally planned to have the four teases
from the districts in Brooklyn Center. but Anoka and Robbi€vsdale could not
enter due to schedule limitations.
Basketball plans are not completed. but it is hoped to provide the program
for boys from 5th through 12th grade. Arrangements are being made to start a
Junior-Senior High group at Willow Lane and Northport Schools.
Teen-le Dances. 11p and Ba oM, Voll„gyball and Senior Citizens will con-
tinue on the present schedule.
A Great Books Discussion Group, through the co-sponsorship of the Minnea-
polis Public Library, is being planned for next year.
A music program was discussed. It was felt that a choral group, rather
than an instrumental group, should be started first. It is hoped that this
can get going after the first of the year.
The question of registration fees was discussed. It was agreed that a
minimum token fee of 50t should be charged for most activities.
It was announced that the Park Board has purchased two Public Address
systems to provide music for skating at Triangle and Willow Lane rinks, in
addition to Northport. These are being paid for out of profits from the soft
drank machines.
