June 24, 1959
The regular monthly meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation Commission was held at
the Village hall, at 8x00 P.M., Wednesday, Jug 24, 1959•
Members present were Brues Morrow, Les Hagen, Jahn Wi.nga,rd, F'ranci's irvi.n and
Mrs. bleanor Houser.
The minutes of the previous meeting were approved as recorded-,
The Suburban Recreation Association Budget request for 1960 was discussed. It was
agreed to request $1250.030 to be used for Golden Age Activities, Day Camping, and Teen
Age Dances.
The Superintendent reported that the meeting of Department Meads, Boards, and al.3age
Council will, be bald Tuesday, July 71, At,this times the park and recreation department
will report on past, present and proposed programs.
It was reported that the warding pool in Garden City Park w.i.l.1 be ready for operation
within the next few seeks. Members of the commission agreed that operating hours should,
be from 12330 to 8 t003 PM. These hours will be expanded as the demand grows.
The Superintendent reported on the progress on the sumirar program as follows:
Attendance.at the playgrounds is well over that of last-year for the opening
week., endanco records shore 1855 children attended in 1958 while this
bears attendance was3656.
Tae Shirt baseball league 6s 550 boys registered in a total of 35 teams. This is
compared to approximately 400 boys registered last year.
The girls softball program which was added this year has a total of 7 teams already
registered' Baton registration have 85 and Archery for boys and'gi.rls has registered 75
at the three locations Northport# Earle Brown, and 'id2low ?sane.
The Red Feather Day C4mping is filled with the alloted 200 and awaiting list exists
for those who canot be acc~~ted.
Swimming reststrat*ons are filled with 300 boys and girls plus a waiting list of
30 more names who wish to of ogi star.
The adult program has shown steady progress. Fourteen personas are registered on
Tuesday abd Thursday evenings ahd elvmn are registered for Archery on Wednesday evenings.
Horseshoe activity for men will begin this coming Wednodday,at the six new courts
which are presently b6ing completed in Garden City Park.'
Adult softball which was begun this year has four man's is s registered in the
Slow Pitch lea he,~ and ; four women's team in the Women.'s League." Scheduled games
started two weeks ago.
Recreation department staffing has increased over the least year -4th a total, of 28
persons worki during the gnawer. This figure does not include umpires and bus drivers.
