RCCRUI TION ODWISSION MEETING

The regular meeting of the Brooklyn Center Recreation
Commission was held at the Village hall, S*00 P.M., Wednesday,$
January 28, 1969. Members present were Bruoe Morrow, Les
Hagen, Prank Irving and Leona Howe. Minutes of the previous
meeting were approved as recorded.
The superintendent gave the progress report as followat
Skating rinks are attracting record crowds and plans are
'being mach o expand some of the rinks next year.

ant %I ow "are Schools. Seventy girls are regiated in
beginners and intermediate classes.
Hockey has exceeded all expectations with 85 boys registered
in seven teams. Meny:aeore boys have indicated a desire
to play next year which will necessitate expanding this
activity.
Speed skating; attracted greater interest this year. Pre-
liminary rases were held at Earle Brown and Willow Lane
rinks snd the -village finals were held at the 3arle Brown
rink. Approximately 80 boys and girls up to ld years of
age participated. The winners in the finals will represent
Brooklyn Center in the Suburban Recreation Association
Skate Derby at Crystal on Saturday, January 31,
Baton and Tap instruction is being held at Northport and
Wnlow ]Lane Schools. 60 girls are enrolled.
Basketball for boys from 8th through 12th grade is being
held at Berle Brown and Willow Lane School. Approximately
120 boys are participating.
Teen Age Dances continue to grow in popularity. Two dances
each month are being held for junior high, and senior high.
If attendance continues to grog, particularly at the junior
high dances, the group will soon outgrow the Earle Brown
lunchroom.
Senior Citizens under the sponsorship of the S.R.A. is
attracting a rew more at each meeting. Attempts are
being made to find a regular meeting place for the group
to meet.

Square Darwing did not receive sufficient registrations
so this eav*ty was eancelled.
Volleyball for adults is continuing in popularity. The
lro6klyn denter rommenes Volleyball League has been organ-
ized and a regular schedule of games is being played. Dents
group are meeting weekly at Earle Brown and Willow Lane
Sehool. Approximately 160 men and women are participating.
The question of whether or not to pay the registration
fee for recreation activities for Welfare or A.D.C. children
was discussed. The board felt that since all such requests had
to be made through the Recreation office, and that these requests
were followed by an investigation'ta determine their validity;
then the legitimate requests should be absorbed by the Recreat-•
ion Commmmmmisssion# It was so moved by Francis Irvin and seconded
by Los Hagen. Motion carried.
It was reported that as of this date $552.00 had been
collected from vending mpohine pop sales in the warming houses.
Approximately half of this is net profit. The board felt that
since this money had coma from the children it should be used
for something that will benefit' those, be helpful to the-Re-
creation program, and not be an added burden on the tax
appropriation. Two items *ere tsentioned as being needed. One
is a portable public address system and record pryer to be
used primarily for. teen age dances. (A borrowed system is
presently being used *hfah is not a glatisfaetory arrangement.)
The other item in an Audio Hailer - to be used at all functions
v&ers groups of people are gathered such as races, olinies,
classes, games, and mtreets, in skating. hooka r, football, base-
ball, play&rounds, day oammmplng, etc. It was moved. by Leomie
Howe, seconded by_Les Ragen,'to recommend to the village council
that an Audio Railer be purchased from vending machine profits.
Motion carried.
The superintendent reported that he was asked to speak on
a panel at the ;beat Laken District Recreation Conference in
South Send. Indiana, in April.. The subject was to be "Supple-
mentary Funds for Rearestions" based = Brooklyn Center'exper-►
i.eness in obtaining funds for foollity and program development
i.e. The Park Based Issues
A report was given on the progress of park development
and ac:quisti.on.

Election of 6ffioers for the year 1958 was announced-
Motion made by Leone Hoer, seconded by Frenois Irvin, that the
present officers be retained. President orrow-.- Vice
President: Lee Hagen, Secrstarys Bill Anthony. Motion, oarried.
