PARK COMMISSION
July 12, 1957
MINUTES
A special meeting of the Brooklyn Center Park hoard was held at the Village Hall
at 7:30 P.M., Friday, July 12, 1957. Members present were "Innl Bullen and Frank
Irvin. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as mead,.
The superintendent reported on the following: The installation of backstops at
Northport and Willow Lane Schools has been completed and Mr. Ward, Osseo Superin-
tendent of Schools has been contacted with regard to improving the diamond. Mr.
Ward has agreed to furnish dirt for filling and will grade the area. Material
for a drag has been purchased and men from the Street Department are making the
drag. Fill dirt has been hauled on the baseball diamond at 59th and Humboldt
Avenue North. Blading in the park at 61st and France Avenue North will probably
be done within the next week. Installation of playground equipment in the park
has been completed by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The possibility of
securing office space in the proposed liquor store building was discussed with the
Village Engineer. The Superintendent attended the Public Hearing relative to the
establishment of a County Park System.
Bids were received for the surfacing of a 30t x 64, area in the park at 61st and
France Avenue North. Motion by Irvin, seconded by Bullen, that the low bid of
$441.00 by Blacktop Driveway Company be accepted. Motion carried.
The possibility of securing the Ford tractor, now owned by the Village, was
discussed. The superintendent was instructed to investigate the cost of over-
hauling the tractor and the means whereby the tractor could be transfered to
the Park Board.
Recommendations regarding the acceptance of property adjoining Northport School
for park purposes was discussed. Action was deferred until more thorough infor-
mation could be obtained regarding the size of the area, drainage, storm sewer
installation, and liability.
Sherman Hasbrouck representing the firm of Thorshov and Cerney, reported on the
study of proposed park locations. A tour of possible future park sites was made
by Mr. Hasbrouck, members of the board, and the superintendent. It was agreed
that the board explore the possibility of securing the services of a landscape
architect to study and recommend proceedures for the development of the proposed
areas. The superintendent was instructed to contact Mr. Corwine and Mr. Law and
arrange interviews with the board.
