MINUTES OF THE PROCEEDINGS OF THE PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION
FOR THE CITY OF BROOKLYN CENTER IN THE COUNTY OF HENNEPIN AND THE STATE
OF MINNESOTA
REGULAR SESSION
OCTOBER 15, 2024
CALL TO ORDER
Chair Jeffrey called the meeting to order at 6:33 pm.
ROLL CALL
Chair Jeffrey, Vice Chair Bonovsky, Commissioners Sorenson, Younglove and Ebert were present. Also present
were Councilmember Marquita Butler, Parks & Recreation Deputy Director Carissa Goebel and Community
Center Supervisor Rachel Kenyon. Commissioner Kaufman was not present.
APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Sorenson moved to approve the agenda. Commissioner Younglove seconded the motion. The
agenda was approved unanimously.
APPROVAL OF AUGUST MINUTES
Chair Jeffrey moved to approve the minutes. Commissioner Sorenson seconded the motion. The minutes were
approved unanimously.
CITY COUNCIL LIAISON REPORT
Councilmember Butler provided an update on the previous Council Meeting. The 252 project was discussed
again at the meeting. The Council still does not approve any of the options that MNDoT has brought forth. The
City has rolled out the expanded response team for the City’s 911 calls for mental health crises. A mental
health professional and social worker would be sent out and police would only be brought in as back up if
needed.
PARK AND SPECIAL EVENT PERMIT PRESENTATION
Deputy Director Goebel gave the presentation that was previously given at a Council meeting to explain the
differences between park rental permits and special events permits. Deputy Director Goebel and Supervisor
Kenyon answered questions on the process and problems seen with the rentals.
COMMUNITY CENTER PROJECT UPDATE
Deputy Director Goebel discussed the current status of the Community Center project. Education at
community engagement events has been the biggest push. She shared the project’s website data and the
concept rendering. The Commission asked some questions on the ballot language and about what the next
steps could look like depending on the outcome of the vote.
Commissioner Sorenson moved to adjourn the meeting. Commissioner Younglove seconded. The decision was
unanimous.
FUTURE MEETING
The next meeting will be November 19th at 6:30pm at the Community Center.
