HomeMy WebLinkAbout1985-161 CCRMember Celia Scott introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 85 -161 RESOLUTION URGING CONGRESS TO ADOPT S.F. 1570 EXEMPTING STATE AND LOCAL EMPLOYEES FROM THE FEDERAL FAIR LABOR STANDARDS ACT 1 WHEREAS, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) has been held by the United States Supreme Court to apply to compensation paid by state and local governments to their employees; and WHEREAS, existing compensation and job scheduling arrangements and agreements best serve the public needs of Brooklyn Center, and our elected officials and our employees want to retain that system; and WHEREAS, if S.F. 1570 is not adopted the City will incur overtime costs plus costs involved in changing our record keeping system to meet FLSA requirements. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center hereby urges its Congressional delegation to support S.F. 1570, which would exempt state and local employees from FLSA overtime requirements, permit the use of compensatory time off in lieu of overtime compensation, and grant an exemption from the FLSA for individuals who volunteer services for state and local governments. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to each member of the Minnesota Congressional delegation and to the League of Minnesota Cities.
