To the members of the Brooklyn Center Charter Commission
From: Carl Wolter, Chair, Brooklyn Center Charter Commission
Re: Charter language for hiring the City Fire Chief.
I did not write a letter to Michael McCauley, City Manager, as directed. I did call him and set
up an appointment to meet with him the morning of June 4th. I contacted Rod Snyder Stan
Leino about this meeting Rod Snyder was able to attend with me.
At the meeting most of the conversation reflected what we had discussed at our April meeting.
Mr. McCauley, said that the firefighter positions are restricted only by how quickly they can
respond to a call. Anyone can apply, they are looking for more volunteers now. The Chief is
selected from this group. Mr. McCauley said that, to his knowledge, this is perfectly legal under
current employment law. Promotion froim within is not an issue.
This was almost verbatum from what Stan Leino told us at the April meeting.
To diverge from the Charter issue.
We further briefly, discussed the workings of the Brooklyn Center Fire Department. There is
some limited "duty pay There is a pension benefit. Fire inspectors are paid (and they are
selected from the volunteers).
I have a greater understanding of the workings of our Fire Department after this meeting, and I
thank them for all that they do.
