McCauley, City Manager DATE: June 4, 1996 ;b1E.W0RA1VD UzV SUBJECT: Communications Task Force Final Report and Recommendations In reviewing your minutes of ?Ylav 21, 1996, I would like to take this opportunity to address several questions raised at your last meeting. The Communications Task Force, as established by the City Council, was designed to review several communications issues and issue a report to the City Council. The Communications Task Force was intended to be a work group that would address the issues given to it by the Citv Council and then disband. From reviewing the materials relating to the creation of the Communications Task Force, it would seem appropriate for the Communications Task Force to compile its final report and recommendations for the City Council so that the City Council could review those recommendations and take such continuing actions as the City Council saw fit. The Communications Coordinator position has not been refilled since the essential job duties have • been incorporated into the normal assignments of several full-time employees in the administration department. Media relations. while an- expectation of all department heads, has been incorporated into Ms. Gohman's responsibility as Assistant City Manager. Press releases are coordinated or created by Ms. Gohman. In reviewing vour minutes, I note an ongoing interest to deal with specific tasks and support. As you are aware, the Discover the Center committee has embarked upon a new project of becoming' an incorporated non-profit organization. I also note the assistance that the Communications Task Force has offered to the Discover the Center group. This might be an avenue for Communications Task Force members to continue to pursue with the Discover the Center corporation after the Communications Task Force is disbanded. We certainly appreciate the work of the Communications Task Force and their efforts since the creation of the task force. I know that the Council is anxious to receive the final report from the Communications Task Force. As we prepare to plan for 1997, it would be helpful to receive the Communications Task Force's final report early this summer so that its recommendations can be considered in the course of this planning. I note in your minutes a suggestion of meeting with me to go over these issues. I would be happy to meet with you if that would be of assistance. I would have attended your meeting this evening, but other commitments preclude that. • cc: Mayor and Councilmembers 6301 Shingle Creek Pkwy, Brooklyn Center, dLIN 55430-2199 • City Hall & TDD Number (612) 569-3300 Recreation and Community Center Phone & TDD Number (612) 569-3400 • FAX (612) 569-3494 An Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunities Employer
