HomeMy WebLinkAbout1975-072 CCR Member Tony Kuefler introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 75 -72 RESOLUTION OPPOSING H.F. 1159 REGARDING OVERDUE MUNICIPAL UTILITY PAYMENTS WHEREAS, H.F. 1159 would prohibit municipal public utilities from assessing a late payment charge of more than 1% per month on the overdue balance of a utility bill and would prohibit municipalities from certifying such past due utility bills to the tax rolls for collection; and WHEREAS, enactment of H.F. 1159 would produce the effect of forcing municipalities to expend funds for strengthening its collection procedures and possibly contracting with private collection agencies; and WHEREAS, it can, therefore, logically be asserted that H.F. 1159 would have the net effect of leading to increased water and sewer rates to be paid by all customers for the purpose of subsidizing collection costs which need not now be incurred: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center: 1 To oppose H.F. 1159 to the extent that it would prohibit collection of overdue municipal utility bills through use of the tax rolls and to urge legislators to reconsider the legislation on the basis of the overall detrimental effect to customers of municipal utilities. 2. To direct that copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Governor of the State of Minnesota, to members of the State Legislature representing Brooklyn Center, to the authors of H.F. 1159, and to members of the House Local and Urban Affairs Committee. f April 7, 1975 Date Mayor I x ATTEST: Clerk The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by member Robert Jensen; and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Philip Cohen, Maurice Britts, Tony Kuefler, Bill Fignar and Robert Jensen; and the following voted against the same: none, whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.
