Discussion of mission statement/nurpose
The preliminary mission statement/purpose developed by the Image Core Group was put on an
overhead to be discussed:
. The image campaign is a community program to inform and
educate both residents and nonresidents of the quality of
life in Brooklyn Center.
Suggestions made from attendees for changes in the text included adding: opportunity, quality of
opportunity, sense of community and nurturing. There was some discussion as to whether the
word nonresident should be used or just state people from within and out of the City, Minnesota,
or the nation.
A suggestion was also made to make the mission statement active instead of passive, i.e., "The
image campaign will promote, educate and nurture.....".
Mary stated that the mission statement/purpose will be presented to the group at the next meeting
using some of the suggestions made.
Discussion of campaign goals
The overhead for the Campaign Goals as created by the Image Core Group was presented to the
group:
To empower individuals who live and work in the city of
Brooklyn Center to take responsibility for developing and
continuing to provide:
•a safe environment
• *an economically progressive business and residential
climate
*attractive neighborhoods and business districts
• •a communication network that ensures the continued
promotion of Brooklyn Center
The group responded to it by agreeing that the first item should include: a safe environment and
a sense of pride, heritage or ownership in the community.
Regarding item four, it was suggested that the word attractive be replaced by inviting. Also, the
line should contain the words recreational opportunities.
Other ideas were to add some historical background because knowledge of historical background
creates unity.
A suggestion was made to add appreciation and respect for diversity to the list of goals, and that
diversity should not only include people but amenities, housing, etc.
There was a discussion about the resident's/business' concern over property values. It was
suggested that the paragraph reading "to empower" include maintaining, developing and
continued improvement
It was also suggested that part of the overall plan of the campaign include a method of measuring
results.
There was also much discussion regarding the definitions of mission statement, goals, etc., and
the structure of these as presented. Mary stated that the core group would go back and blend the
ideas presented from the meeting with the preliminary mission statement and goals, and present
• the result at the next meeting.
When asked the group unanimously and enthusiastically pledged their commitment to help the
image campaign.
Break into small groups for campaign slogan brainstorming
The group split into groups of five and wrote their slogans on bumper stickers. Some of the
suggestions were:
*It's right in the Center
*Pride in the Center
*Brooklyn Center CENTER of Opportunity
*The Center for ..............you!
*The Center's for you!
•Brooklyn Center: Tradition, Pride &
Community
•The CENTER of Attention
•The CENTER is the Focus
•The All American CENTER
•The CENTER is Moving
oThe CENTER of Opportunity
•The Something More City
•A great place to start, a great place to stay
oCenter of Pride & Progress
•Center of your Life
•Brooklyn Center your life
•Come to the Center
Discussion of elan of action
After discussion, it was decided that the media publish the proposed mission statement and goals
and also solicit ideas from the community for a slogan.
It was also stated that getting the public involved would empower individuals to promote the
image campaign and that presenting the mission statement to the public and soliciting input for
the slogan through the media was a good way to do that.
Attendees were asked to submit any additional slogans to Terri at city hall as soon as possible.
A master list of slogans will be presented and voted upon at the next meeting.
The Image Core Group will meet again on January S, and the task force will meet January 12 at 8
a.m. in council chambers. Reminder notices will be sent.
The meeting was adjourned at 10:30.
