Gray, Phil Cohen, Scott Kline, Gerald Splinter, Brad Hoffman, Tim Mahoney, Rod Snyder, Karen Youngberg, Kathleen Carmody, Kathy Kolbo Agenda items were discussed as follows: Discussion of mission statement/nurpose The preliminary mission statement/purpose developed by the Image Core Group was put on an overhead to be discussed: . The image campaign is a community program to inform and educate both residents and nonresidents of the quality of life in Brooklyn Center. Suggestions made from attendees for changes in the text included adding: opportunity, quality of opportunity, sense of community and nurturing. There was some discussion as to whether the word nonresident should be used or just state people from within and out of the City, Minnesota, or the nation. A suggestion was also made to make the mission statement active instead of passive, i.e., "The image campaign will promote, educate and nurture.....". Mary stated that the mission statement/purpose will be presented to the group at the next meeting using some of the suggestions made. Discussion of campaign goals The overhead for the Campaign Goals as created by the Image Core Group was presented to the group: To empower individuals who live and work in the city of Brooklyn Center to take responsibility for developing and continuing to provide: •a safe environment • *an economically progressive business and residential climate *attractive neighborhoods and business districts • •a communication network that ensures the continued promotion of Brooklyn Center The group responded to it by agreeing that the first item should include: a safe environment and a sense of pride, heritage or ownership in the community. Regarding item four, it was suggested that the word attractive be replaced by inviting. Also, the line should contain the words recreational opportunities. Other ideas were to add some historical background because knowledge of historical background creates unity. A suggestion was made to add appreciation and respect for diversity to the list of goals, and that diversity should not only include people but amenities, housing, etc. There was a discussion about the resident's/business' concern over property values. It was suggested that the paragraph reading "to empower" include maintaining, developing and continued improvement It was also suggested that part of the overall plan of the campaign include a method of measuring results. There was also much discussion regarding the definitions of mission statement, goals, etc., and the structure of these as presented. Mary stated that the core group would go back and blend the ideas presented from the meeting with the preliminary mission statement and goals, and present • the result at the next meeting. When asked the group unanimously and enthusiastically pledged their commitment to help the image campaign. Break into small groups for campaign slogan brainstorming The group split into groups of five and wrote their slogans on bumper stickers. Some of the suggestions were: *It's right in the Center *Pride in the Center *Brooklyn Center CENTER of Opportunity *The Center for ..............you! *The Center's for you! •Brooklyn Center: Tradition, Pride & Community •The CENTER of Attention •The CENTER is the Focus •The All American CENTER •The CENTER is Moving oThe CENTER of Opportunity •The Something More City •A great place to start, a great place to stay oCenter of Pride & Progress •Center of your Life •Brooklyn Center your life •Come to the Center Discussion of elan of action After discussion, it was decided that the media publish the proposed mission statement and goals and also solicit ideas from the community for a slogan. It was also stated that getting the public involved would empower individuals to promote the image campaign and that presenting the mission statement to the public and soliciting input for the slogan through the media was a good way to do that. Attendees were asked to submit any additional slogans to Terri at city hall as soon as possible. A master list of slogans will be presented and voted upon at the next meeting. The Image Core Group will meet again on January S, and the task force will meet January 12 at 8 a.m. in council chambers. Reminder notices will be sent. The meeting was adjourned at 10:30. • 0
