Also present were Eileen Capshaw, Chamber of Commerce Director Mary Welch and Personnel Coordinator Geralyn Barone. STATUS OF COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR POSITION Barone reviewed the Brooklyn Center budget process and the results of the truth in taxation hearing, with particular regard to the status of the communications coordinator position. She noted there had been no official action on this position yet. PROMOTIONAL BROCHURE AND VIDEO Chairperson Capshaw said recognizing that money is tight, he would like to identify specific projects that the task force could work on and then obtain private money to pay for the projects. He said promotional brochures could be printed for real estate agents, stores, school kids, and other groups. He added Member Nelson thought this would cost between $2,000 and $3,000. Chairperson Capshaw said he also thought a video that could be used by PTAs, cable television, service clubs and other groups would be nice. . Chairperson Capshaw said if private money is used to pay for these projects because City government is not in a position to raise the money, the Chamber could be linked to work with the task force in raising the funds. He noted there is some money available in foundations, Hennepin County could be a source, Eileen is a grant writer, and some members of the business community have already said they would commit some support. He added the money could be received into a nonprofit group like the Chamber of Commerce. Chairperson Capshaw suggested there could be two subcommittees formed, one for fund raising and the other to develop a brochure. He noted it would be nice to have an open hearing to ask people for ideas about the positive things about Brooklyn Center that can be promoted. The task force reviewed cost proposals for producing a promotional video received from Northwest Community Television ($2,000), Dan Reiva ($9,450), and Collective Resources, Inc. ($2,500). Chairperson Capshaw said the first step could be to develop a brochure. The basis of information for this brochure could be obtained from discussion at an open meeting in which the task force receives input on things the City has to sell. Welch asked if the school districts could be asked for money, and there was a discussion regarding possible additional revenue 12-2-92 -1- • • • sources, such as the Chamber of Commerce, civic groups, and other entities. Chairperson Capshaw noted developing a logo might be the first step, and Eileen Capshaw asked if the task force had someone in mind to develop the logo. Member Warner noted the hospital where she works has changed its logo and she knows of some people who would be resources to produce one. Chairperson Capshaw asked Warner to take on the responsibility for working on the logo, and then the brochure and video could be done after the logo is in place. PUBLIC MEETING The task force discussed organizing a public meeting to obtain input that might be used as a basis for the promotional brochure and video. Member Keehr said she would assist in organizing the event, and Welch said she could help with publicity. The task force set the meeting for January 20, 1993. There was discussion regarding the format of the meeting, and it was agreed that having small group discussions would be best to elicit the good things about Brooklyn Center. There was further discussion regarding the details of the public meeting. Attendees at the public meeting would be asked what they are most proud of in Brooklyn Center and around what they would like to build the City's identity. ALL AMERICA CITY VIDEO The task force members proceeded to view the All America City video. This was followed by a discussion on what the focus of the City's video should be.
