HomeMy WebLinkAbout1973-034 CCR1 1 1 Member John Leary introduced the following resolution and moved its adoption: RESOLUTION NO. 73 -34 RESOLUTION URGING LEGISLATIVE RESTRAINT IN MANDATING COSTS ON LOCAL GOVERNMENT WHEREAS, the 1971 legislature enacted stringent laws limiting the ability of local government to levy property taxes to pay for public services; and WHEREAS, a large portion of the cost of municipal government results from requirements imposed by the state legislature and its administrative agencies; and WHEREAS, there is an inclination in the legislative halls to mandate many provisions on municipalities which result in increased expenditures by municipalities; and WHEREAS, there is an accompanying legislative inclination not to recognize the increased costs imposed upon municipalities: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Brooklyn Center to urge legislators to be cognizant of the cost ramifications to tax limited local government with respect to each and every bill which legislators consider. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by the City Council to call upon the legislative representatives of the people of Brooklyn Center to be aware of this concern and to transmit such concern to colleague legislators. The City Clerk is hereby directed to transmit copies of this resolution to the aforementioned legislators, and to the chairmen of legislative committees and to the governor of the State of Minnesota. March 12, 1973 Mayor The motion for the adoption of the foregoing resolution was duly seconded by member Bill Fignar and upon vote being taken thereon, the following voted in favor thereof: Philip Cohen, John Leary, Maurice Britts, Tony Kuefler, and Bill Fignar; and the following voted against the same: none, whereupon said resolution was declared duly passed and adopted.
